American entertainment media Page Six reported on the 21st (local time) that "Malcolm-Jamal Warner drowned during a vacation in Costa Rica with his family." Local police stated that he was swept away by strong currents while swimming at Cocles Beach in the Limon area around 2 p.m. on the 21st.
Those nearby pulled him to the shore, and the Red Cross rescue team immediately attempted CPR, but he was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death was determined to be "asphyxiation by submersion."
The news of Warner's death was first shared via social media by a female family member known as Kimara. She noted, "My cousin drowned and passed away in Costa Rica yesterday," urging others to always wear life jackets while swimming during trips.
