Dex, a broadcaster, will appear in 'The Defects' as actor Kim Jin-young.
A production presentation for the new ENA Monday-Tuesday drama 'The Defects' (scripted by Ahn So-jung and directed by Oh Gi-hwan) was held at the Stanford Hotel in Sangam-dong, Mapo District, Seoul, on the 21st. Attendees included director Oh Gi-hwan and actors Yum Jung-ah, Won Jina, Choi Young-joon, and Kim Jin-young (Dex).
'The Defects' is an action thriller that depicts the brutal survival and revenge of children who narrowly survive after being abandoned by their adoptive parents. Based on the Kakao webtoon that won the 'Best Creativity Award' at the 2017 International Content Market SPP and has garnered over 51 million views, it is attracting attention from both original work enthusiasts and drama fans.
Kim Jin-young, also known as creator Dex, plays Jung Hyun, the human weapon raised by Kim Se-hee (Yum Jung-ah) and the actual operator of an illegal adoption trafficking organization. Jung Hyun is a character who absolutely obeys Se-hee's orders and is expected to lead the tension-filled developments. The chemistry between rookie actor Kim Jin-young and the reliable Yum Jung-ah is also highlighted as a key point of interest.
Kim Jin-young said, "I personally think that you only get a clear reason for wanting to act after trying it. I felt that it suited my natural style as Kim Jin-young beyond Dex. I like to focus intensely when doing a particular task, and I was attracted to the fact that an actor consistently explores and develops a character. I feel grateful for the opportunity to work with the director and great actors. I have a bit of guilt that I might overshadow the great actors with my performance as Kim Jin-young, but I did my best to compensate for those feelings while filming."
Kim Jin-young remarked, "There's a saying that when you work with someone good at acting, the other person becomes good too, and I couldn't empathize with that until I worked with Yum Jung-ah, Won Jina, and Choi Young-joon and realized it was true. Since the other kids are seniors compared to me, I was able to have the highest level of immersion in every scene. I felt grateful but also sorry, and said, 'I was physically exhausted from all the action. The action in acting was different from real action. I, as a person, need to genuinely express myself through my facial expressions, but even when doing action scenes with the slender actress Won Jina, I had to actually apply strength. There are some scenes that feel quite realistic, and there were instances when I actually hit. There was a scene with Choi Young-joon where I felt I could genuinely exert power, but while doing that, I experienced a slight blackout. It happened because I was putting in too much strength and couldn't breathe properly, leading to a blackout. Choi Young-joon really supported my strength, and I have high expectations for our scenes together."
Choi Young-joon said, "Kim Jin-young is really fast. During an action scene shot at night, there was an instance when I almost got hit because she was so quick I had no chance to evade. This is how it should be done. It is right to practice more to make it as realistic as possible, but her athleticism is impressive; she is so fast and strong. She truly throws people around." Kim Jin-young apologized with a laugh, saying, "I think I got a bit excited while doing it too."
Won Jina joked, "I had to be somewhat sincere to engage as deeply as Kim Jin-young. I was worried because I am small and delicate, but I tried my best, fearing that Kim Jin-young might get hurt by my punch." Yum Jung-ah laughed, saying, "I'm so glad we are on the same team."
Meanwhile, the new ENA Monday-Tuesday drama 'The Defects' will air for the first time on the 21st at 10 p.m.
