'Brave detectives 4' introduced the active role of detectives who captured the criminal after persistent investigations.
The 43rd episode aired on the 18th on T-Cast E Channel and featured former Iksan Police Station violent crimes team leader Kim Sang-won along with former Deputy Commissioner Yoon Wae-chul of the Forensic Investigation Unit (KCSI) and Kim Jin-soo, who granted their investigative stories.
The first case started from a report that a car had crashed into a street tree, resulting in significant damage. Inside the vehicle were a couple in their 50s, and the wife, who was in the passenger seat, died instantly, while her husband, the driver, was reported to have exited the vehicle and was trying to stop the bleeding. During this period, the traffic accident investigation team reported that the scene was suspicious. Following the car's driving route, there were no signs of braking, and the headrest in the passenger seat where the wife was seated had been removed. It was determined that the wife was not wearing a seatbelt, raising suspicions of foul play.
The day after the accident, the eldest daughter reported her suspicions about her stepfather's involvement to the police. The couple had remarried five years after losing their previous spouses, and according to the eldest daughter, the stepfather had been abusing the family and threatening them with an air gun. In particular, four months prior, the stepfather's truck had crashed into a reservoir on a curve, and at that time, he had saved only his 5-year-old stepsibling while reportedly pushing the mother away. Additionally, it was revealed that three months later, at the husband's urging, the wife had eaten pufferfish and was taken to the emergency room due to symptoms of paralysis. She was also said to have mentioned that she would leave him right after repaying the money her husband borrowed from their second daughter.
The husband, surnamed Kim (pseudonym), had taken out two traffic accident death insurance policies about five months before his wife's death, and shortly before the accident, he had taken out an additional policy, allowing him to potentially receive more than 1.21 billion won upon her death. In particular, suspicions were raised due to the insistence on only having traffic accident insurance for his wife, who did not even have a driver's license, as well as contacting an insurance agent immediately after the accident to register her death.
The husband claimed, "I had an accident while trying to avoid a person crossing the road after going to buy seafood that my wife liked," but his wife did not like seafood, and the reporter stated that there were no people around the accident scene. Additionally, the husband, who had 20 years of experience as a taxi driver, was reported to have intentionally diverted his route through an accident-prone area, and the cause of death of his ex-wife was confirmed to be suicide by pesticide ingestion without an autopsy. It was also known that his children with his ex-wife had severed ties due to his abuse.
The husband denied all circumstances and accepted a polygraph test but became furious at the mention of his ex-wife, later refusing to provide a verbal statement and opting for a written statement instead. However, he ultimately exhibited a bizarre attitude by submitting a declaration stating he had "loved his wife" and hoped for leniency, which was found to have signatures of acquaintances forged. Ultimately, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The second case introduced by KCSI began with a report stating, "My parents haven't returned home and their phones are off." The parents had disappeared three days after meeting their son, and the next day, 7 million won was withdrawn from the mother's bank account. The bank's CCTV captured a young man wearing a hat withdrawing cash, and it was revealed that he had stamped the slip with the mother's seal. The investigative team collected fingerprints from the slip and conducted inquiries near the last cell tower of the parents' mobile phones, eventually capturing a man of the same description on the convenience store's CCTV nearby. Although the parents' vehicle was found in the vicinity, blood and traces were absent. However, blood was found inside the parents' house, on the inside of the front door and the stairs leading to the basement boiler room, and ultimately, the bodies of the parents were discovered at the construction site, covered with dirt. The victims were confirmed to have been attacked in their home and were stabbed indiscriminately with a knife.
The detectives captured a suspicious individual from gold trading records from a year ago, recalling that he had been in the area. This male, in his mid-20s, was found to have burned clothing and towels stained with blood at his residence, and the timing of the bank withdrawal matched his mobile phone records. Based on his call history, detectives confirmed that he had visited the residence of a former girlfriend, and after checking membership for each game company and tracking his real-time IP, they arrested him at a PC room. Notably, he continued to log into games while evading capture.
After his arrest, the perpetrator stated, "I was tired of running away," and was found to be in possession of 300 sleeping pills. He had threatened the victims upon returning home after going out, obtained their bank account and cellphone passwords, and although the victims, aware of his difficult circumstances as their neighbor, had decided not to report him and promised to forgive him, he was consumed by anxiety and returned with a knife to murder them. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Meanwhile, 'Brave detectives 4' has garnered much attention by announcing a collaboration with the legendary mystery animation 'Detective Conan.' On the 16th, a special profiling video featuring 'Brave detectives 4' and the theatrical release 'Detective Conan: The Phantom of the Eye' was released through the E Channel YouTube channel, which elicited responses from netizens such as, "A collaboration that excites mystery enthusiasts," "I couldn't wait to watch the theatrical version after watching the collaboration video with 'Brave detectives'," and "It was enjoyable as a preview, and I had a much more fun experience viewing it," as well as "Can you believe the collaboration between 'Brave detectives' and Conan!"
