The director of the film 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' finished a special GV with YouTuber Genius Lee Seung-guk.
On the 18th, the team behind the film 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' (directed by Kim Byeong-woo, provided by Lotte Entertainment and Smilegate, distributed by Lotte Entertainment, produced by Realize Pictures, co-produced by MYM Entertainment, Smilegate Realize, and The Present Company, abbreviated as 'Omniscient Reader') announced that a special GV was held on the 17th.
'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' is a fantasy action film about the world of a novel becoming reality on the day the story, which has been serialized for over 10 years, concludes, with the only reader, 'Kim Dok-ja,' joining the protagonist 'Yu Jun-hyuk' and his companions in a quest to survive in a world that has perished. It is adapted into a movie from the popular web novel of the same name.
The special GV that took place featured Genius Lee Seung-guk and Director Kim Byeong-woo. Before the GV began, Lee Seung-guk expressed his thoughts, stating, 'I found it enjoyable while watching, and afterward I thought that the director must have had a lot of worries in adapting it into a film.' They started the discussion with questions about the adaptation from the original novel to the film's structure.
Director Kim Byeong-woo stated, 'Understanding the differences between media sufficiently and starting the work was very important.' He noted, 'For a single film to be completed, it must have a development arc, so I was contemplating how to turn the vast original story into a single narrative from the start. I believed that there should be one important theme, which was 'to be together.'
He focused on 'how the character, 'Kim Dok-ja' (played by Ahn Hyo-seop), who gained great abilities after the story he alone knew became reality, would use that power.' He said they started building events from the premise of rewriting the ending where the protagonist survives together. In particular, he added, 'Unlike the novel, the film presents scenarios where actual actors bring the scenes to life with their bodies and voices in a setting that resembles reality, which allowed me to deepen the characters while also focusing on the emotions and expressions of the characters, highlighting that the story they build together and their emotions are also points of interest.'
Regarding the character 'Kim Dok-ja', who simultaneously clears scenarios known only to himself while showing various internal conflicts, Director Kim Byeong-woo said, 'The process of how he resolves his internal conflicts is an important element that enhances the story's appeal.' He aimed to depict the transformation and growth of the once very ordinary 'Kim Dok-ja' in a compelling manner.
With the fresh casting of 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' and the impressive performances of all the actors, Lee Seung-guk especially praised Nana for her perfect action as 'Jeong Hee-won'. Director Kim Byeong-woo mentioned, 'I was very surprised on set as well. Some cuts were very lengthy. I wanted to capture the action lines' movements in a single shot to show how the character performs. (Nana) prepared a lot, and I was surprised too,' he remarked, expressing confidence in Nana's potential to become an action queen.
Before the start of the GV, Lee Seung-guk took a moment to gauge how many audience members had fully read the original, encountered parts of it, or were watching the film without any knowledge of the original. While the audience varied in recognition of the original work, all fully enjoyed the thrilling experience the film gave them. During the Q&A session with the audience, questions poured in from those with different levels of information, and due to the high number of people wanting to ask questions, there was a heated environment where they even had to play rock-paper-scissors for the chance to ask.
Some audience members expressed their eagerness by asking how soon they could see the next work, and a fan of the original shouted with a trembling voice, 'I will watch it many times!' bringing lively energy to the atmosphere. Lastly, Director Kim Byeong-woo shared his feelings, saying, 'These are the audience members I met for the first time through this film. I will remember this place and this time for a long time,' while Lee Seung-guk said, 'N screenings are always welcome,' encouraging support for 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet.'
