'Our Movie,' the first rugby-themed drama in Korea, is set to be released as a sequel. Writer Lim Jin-a shared her feelings when she first learned about the casting.
The new SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Try: We Become Miracles' (scripted by Lim Jin-a/director Jang Young-seok) is a comedic coming-of-age sports drama that will premiere on the 25th, portraying the unpredictable and quirky director Joo Ga-ram and the perennial underdog rugby team of Hanyang Physical Education High School as they race toward victory in the National Sports Festival, making it the first work in Korea to deal with rugby.
Director Jang Young-seok, who co-directed the drama 'Taxi Driver 2,' is collaborating with writer Lim Jin-a, who won the best work award in the SBS Cultural Foundation script competition. They have joined forces with a strong cast of actors, including Yoon Kye-sang (as Joo Ga-ram), Lim Se-mi (as Bae Ji), and Kim Yo-han (as Yoon Sung-jun), who bring excellent acting skills and vibrant energy.
Writer Lim Jin-a caught attention by expressing her feelings about winning the grand prize at the SBS script contest in 2021 before the premiere of 'Try.' She said, 'I think I was lucky. The fact that rugby is at the center is refreshing, and I think the uniqueness of attending a sports high school, the vibrant characters, and the details from my experiences were important.'
Especially, writer Lim Jin-a revealed the reason for choosing rugby, stating, 'The rule that you cannot pass the ball forward was very attractive to me.' She added, 'Rugby is the roughest yet most human sport. Even while bodies collide, you have to constantly check where your teammates are, and it's a sport that absolutely requires teamwork, which I found impressive.' She expressed excitement about the dramatic allure of rugby, noting, 'In the process of preparing the work, I was fortunately able to directly interview at a sports high school, and the Rugby Association was a great help, which was a huge support.'
Additionally, writer Lim Jin-a captivated attention by mentioning her favorite character in the drama, the role of Joo Ga-ram portrayed by Yoon Kye-sang. She described, 'Joo Ga-ram is funny, touching, and pitiful, but he embodies the image of a 'good adult' I have always dreamed of.' She expressed, 'He acknowledges his mistakes, learns what the right path is, and teaches that to his juniors, making him someone I aspire to be like,' amplifying curiosity about Yoon Kye-sang's portrayal of Joo Ga-ram.
Writer Lim Jin-a recalled her first meeting with Yoon Kye-sang, saying, 'I was so happy to learn about the casting. Especially when actor Yoon Kye-sang walked into the meeting room, I thought, 'Ah, it's Joo Ga-ram.' He was Joo Ga-ram incarnate with a serious face and the eyes of a boy.'
She continued, 'Actress Lim Se-mi is someone I personally really like, and when I first met her, I was just a fan. But during our conversation about the role of Bae Ji, I thought, 'Is this the character speaking right now?' She completely melted into the character. Actor Kim Yo-han was youthful itself. He encapsulated all the anxiety, passion, and freshness that the character of 'Yoon Sung-jun' holds, which was so refreshing and rewarding.'
Furthermore, writer Lim Jin-a expressed deep affection for the rugby club, stating, 'Our rugby club friends! Each one of them created such lovable characters that none could be left out.' She also specifically wanted to mention Ms. Gil Hae-yeon, who played the role of 'Kang Jeong-hyo,' saying, 'She warmly showed the appearance of an adult I wished would be by my side during my childhood.' She concluded, 'Actor Park Jeong-yeon's sharp and clear gaze was perfect for the role of 'Seo Woo-jin.' Actor Jeong Sun-won, who played 'Bang Heung-nam,' effortlessly and naturally transitioned between comedy and serious drama while leading the mood of the work.'
Writer Lim Jin-a expressed her anticipation for the chemistry between Joo Ga-ram and the rugby team, saying, 'I hear the chemistry between 'Joo Ga-ram' and the perennial underdog 'rugby team' is something to look forward to. They trained together for rugby, enhancing their teamwork, and I've heard the atmosphere on set was excellent.' She also noted, 'I hope to see the strong and vibrant friendship of the badass girls from the shooting club, Bae Ji, Seo Woo-jin, and Na Seol-hyun, as well as the unique chemistry of their different shining youth.'
Above all, writer Lim Jin-a conveyed the message she wants to deliver through 'Try,' stating, 'I wanted to talk about 'running despite everything.' In life, everyone encounters numerous tackles and might stumble or not be able to get up at once, but despite that, it's essential to keep moving forward and not give up until the end. That is how we play the game of life.'
In conclusion, she sincerely urged, 'There will be various faces of youth. Following their growth in their own way will make you both laugh and cry. Comedic and touching characters are waiting for you, so please join us.' This has heightened expectations for the upcoming broadcast of 'Try.'
The new SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Try: We Become Miracles,' which will fill this summer with youthful energy, will premiere at 9:50 p.m. on the 25th (Friday).
