As a popular YouTuber introduced a restaurant in Yeosu, which became embroiled in a 'unfriendliness controversy,' Yeosu City quickly took administrative action.
Lee Seok-joo, a member of the Yeosu City Council, announced on social media on the 17th that "related to the recent controversy over customer service in local restaurants, Yeosu City has delivered an official notice requesting restaurant operators and staff to improve their service responses." He noted, "The quality of service at restaurants is a very important factor in attracting tourists and restoring the local economy," stating that they should refrain from actions that could cause discomfort, such as loud responses and limiting one-person customers, provide explanations about ingredients and prices, ensure meal time guarantees, and promote a culture of polite responses.
The incident arose when a travel YouTuber visited a famous restaurant in Yeosu alone and, despite ordering for two, was given the hint by the owner to "hurry up and eat" after about 20 minutes. This restaurant was known to be featured on the popular YouTube channel 'Another House', which fueled greater outrage among internet users.
In response, Yeosu City plans to visit the restaurant directly and conduct kindness training for the staff. Council member Lee Seok-joo emphasized, "We will work together with the administration and the council to ensure that the phrase 'Yeosu, where you want to come back' does not remain a mere slogan.
Meanwhile, YouTuber Pungja, who leads 'Another House,' had previously faced a similar controversy in the Anyang edition. At that time, it was revealed late that a restaurant introduced by Pungja was owned by a relative of the recommender, leading to a controversy over 'fairness,' and ultimately, the production team deleted the video and apologized.
Subsequently, Pungja returned to Anyang, stating that she would "find the real restaurants," confronting the controversy head-on, and she began to reflect on various places, including a squid bossam restaurant recommended by a local hairdresser with 30 years of experience, aiming for 'restoration of authenticity.' At that time, she caused a stir by declaring, "I will go to the end, whether I die or Anyang dies."
Perhaps due to such precedents, following the Yeosu controversy, internet users have been responding with comments like, "Pungja must be upset," and "It's unfortunate that it's Yeosu again this time."
