Jo Yuri said she cut her own hair and participated in the audition.
On the broadcast of MBC's Omniscient Interfering View on the 12th, Jo Yuri talked about the audition for the Netflix series Squid Game.
Jo Yuri's manager discussed the time when she passed the audition for Squid Game, saying, "I was recording, and although I usually don't answer the phone, I felt like I had to answer it." Jo Yuri said, "When I answered the phone, the manager said, 'You made it.'"
The manager noted, "When I first met Jo Yuri, she was already a singer but expressed a desire to act. I told her she needed to study a lot. In my view, she was visibly improving." He said, "It was such a big project that I couldn't believe she actually passed. I called her right away, and she was screaming and crying."
The manager said, "I saw her struggling a lot from the side. I also got emotional and hurriedly ended the call." Jo Yuri said, "I watched all the drama auditions that came out at that time."
Jo Yuri said, "I thought I was doing it for no reason because I got rejected from all the auditions." She continued, "I wanted it so much and desperately wanted to secure a role, so I approached the audition like a mad person. I acted with the mindset that I had to do it no matter what. The director said that my gaze reminded him of Jun Hee's gaze, which is why he chose me."
The manager smiled, saying, "Jo Yuri memorized the script every day. She forgets the lyrics when she sings, though."
Meanwhile, Jo Yuri met actor Lee Dawit, with whom she acted in Squid Game 3. Jo Yuri said, "It was not an audition for him; it was casting." Lee Dawit said, "I worked with the director on the previous project," mentioning the film The Fortress.
Jo Yuri said, "I went through the 4th audition," adding, "To really portray the participant's feeling, I cut my hair with scissors and went in with unrefined hair."
Jo Yuri said, "For the first audition, I filmed a video and sent it in; for the second, it was the deputy director's audition, and starting from the third, I met with the director." She said, "While acting out a crying scene, I couldn't cry. I asked to be called again if there was a fourth audition, saying that I could cry on command like a faucet."
Jo Yuri said, "I couldn't cry during the 4th audition either, but I thought I couldn't go home like this, so I said I would try one more time. A single tear fell, and the hardships I faced during the auditions came to mind."
