ENA's new Monday-Tuesday drama 'The Defects' takes a chance with its unique charm.
Set to premiere on the 21st at 10 p.m., ENA's new Monday-Tuesday drama 'The Defects' (directed by Oh Gi-hwan, written by Ahn So-jung) is an action thriller that portrays the desperate survival and revenge of children who barely survived after being abandoned by their adoptive parents.
'The Defects,' based on a Kakao Webtoon that won 5,100 million views and the 'Best Creativity Award' at the international content market SPP 2017 Webtoon Awards, is generating buzz with a solid cast spanning generations, including Yum Jung-ah, Won Jina, Choi Young-joon, and Kim Jin-young.
'The Defects' deals with the shocking premise of buying and selling children abandoned by parents and an illegal adoption cartel where 'if you don't like it, you can get a full refund' after adoption. Even before its first broadcast, comments from prospective viewers such as "Was the 'child' in the drama's title not an eye?," "It's darker than expected, just my style," "It seems even more immersive since it's a story that could realistically happen," "I can't resist seeing Yum Jung-ah as a villain," and "The concept is unique" are pouring in, raising expectations for the drama.
While wanting to turn a blind eye, 'The Defects' boldly incorporates the harsh realities that cannot be ignored within the framework of a genre piece, probing into the cruel reality that is likely happening somewhere at this moment, prompting viewers' immersion. Ahn So-jung, the writer, noted, "Since the thrilling revenge of abandoned children is the core, there will be pleasure in watching the process of wicked parents collapsing." Director Oh Gi-hwan expressed confidence, saying, "The rapid pacing and strong setups are the differentiating points of 'The Defects.' It will captivate viewers with a movie-like immersion."
The casting lineup is also solid. Yum Jung-ah as the designer Kim Se-hee, who aims to create the 'perfect child,' and Won Jina as Kim Ah-hyun, a survivor who dramatically survives among the refunded children and stands against the world. This intense confrontation between the two characters is the central axis of 'The Defects' and the biggest point of interest. Additionally, with Choi Young-joon (playing Woo Tae-sik) and Kim Jin-young (playing Jung Hyun) joining in, the high-stakes psychological warfare and thrilling action are set to elevate expectations.
With such a groundbreaking subject matter intertwined with tension and fast-paced developments, profound messages, and the solid performances of the actors, 'The Defects' is being amplified in anticipation as a high-quality thriller.
