Tonight (10th) at 9 p.m., MBC's 'True Story' will investigate the incident involving the shooting of a pet dog with a BB gun in Geoje.
■ First true story: The incident involving the shooting of a pet dog with a BB gun in Geoje
In June, three unidentified men broke into a restaurant yard in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, and indiscriminately shot at sleeping pet dogs with BB guns. They wandered around the yard for about an hour, throwing stones and repeatedly targeting the dogs that were tied up.
An 8-year-old dog named 'Somsomi,' found covered in bruises, died from respiratory failure, and a hearing-impaired dog named 'Maehwa' had to have one eye removed due to severe corneal damage. Another dog named 'Ggae' has broken teeth and cannot eat properly. The family of the affected pet owner is calling for strict punishment for the perpetrators, stating, 'These dogs were our family.'
▶ Marines catching ghosts? Marines catching dogs
The perpetrators of the indiscriminate BB gun shooting incident were men in their 20s who had checked into a pension near the restaurant the day before the incident, two of whom were revealed to be active-duty marines. The perpetrators cruelly targeted the dogs using BB guns equipped with flashlights, moving like they were conducting a military operation.
However, immediately after the incident, the family of the affected dog contacted the military and the perpetrators several times, but the perpetrators shifted the blame onto each other. When the pet owner asked the perpetrators why they abused the dogs, their responses were difficult to understand. In response, the production team of 'True Story' acquired CCTV footage from the time of the incident and analyzed the perpetrators' actions... This will be highlighted tonight (10th) in the MBC 'True Story.'
■ Second true story: Why Private Won cannot be discharged
Private Won Hyun-sik, who fell into a person in a vegetative state due to hypoxic brain damage, has been relying on a ventilator for 1 year and 7 months. Unable to communicate, his mother has given up her livelihood to stay by his side 24 hours a day, not knowing when he will wake up.
▶ Six months into enlistment, my son returned as a person in a vegetative state
Having majored in architecture, Private Won promised to build a house for his mother. He enlisted in the military in June 2023. He completed training for his driving specialty but was assigned to operate 'portable anti-aircraft missiles,' which was different from his original post after being deployed. Private Won endured extreme stress due to repeated verbal abuse while living with seniors in a cramped and harsh operational position. He reportedly made several remarks hinting at suicide during conversations with close friends. Subsequently, he underwent an evaluation by the Military Service Examination Committee regarding his discharge, but he had to return to his unit. Eventually, after a suicide attempt in December 2023, he lost consciousness due to hypoxic brain damage and has been hospitalized since.
The family is outraged by the military's response, which led Private Won to suicide. They are curious about what caused the 21-year-old to be pushed to such an extreme and why he has not been discharged despite the discharge date having passed.
