(Interview ② continued) "Just pass it to the child." Actor Noh Jae-won named actor Yim Siwan's 'Killing Machine' as the season's best villain.
Noh Jae-won held an interview on the afternoon of the 9th at a café in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. He spoke with domestic reporters about his recent participation in the popular Netflix original series 'Squid Game' season 3, as well as his latest news.
The 'Squid Game' series, which premiered in 2021, contains a story about people participating in a mysterious survival challenge with a prize of 45.6 billion won, risking their lives to become the last winner. Since season 1, it has swept the top spot in global TV shows, gaining a global phenomenon-level popularity not only in Korea but also in North America, Europe, South America, and Asia, and has established itself as the most popular series on Netflix up to the recently released final installment, season 3.
In this context, Noh Jae-won played the role of participant Nam Gyu in seasons 2 and 3. Nam Gyu, in the drama, shows tenacious survival skills while following the former popular rapper Thanos (Choi Seung-hyun). Even after Thanos's death, he is a character who adds tension to the plot alongside the Killing Machine (Yim Siwan) and Min-su (Lee Da-wit).
Some cast members even picked Nam Gyu as the worst villain. However, Noh Jae-won said, "I think it's my brother Siwan," and identified the Killing Machine, also known as 'Killing Machine,' as the worst villain. He started by saying, "Of course, Nam Gyu also did a lot of bad things," but added, "However, it seemed like Nam Gyu met the Killing Machine and found a partner. He ignores Thanos and Min-su, thinking that the Killing Machine is the only one who recognizes him, and acted as if he thought he was just playing around," which drew laughter.
He continued, "But after Nam Gyu exited, I was increasingly shocked by the Killing Machine's acting in the latter part. I was nothing. In the end, the Killing Machine was the most important character. I was astonished."
In particular, Noh Jae-won remarked, "I was most surprised when the Killing Machine said, 'Just pass it to the child.' In the final game, when the Killing Machine spoke those words while holding a pole on the bridge, I don't know if he thought he could win alone, but it was shocking when he asked what happened to Jun-hee (Jo Yuri) while trying to kill the child."
Additionally, he said, "Siwan hyung's acting was very impressive. So I could understand the Killing Machine. It made complete sense that he would struggle to survive because he was afraid of dying at the edge of the cliff. That's how impressive Siwan hyung's acting was."
Among his filmography, Noh Jae-won also mentioned Kim Seo-wan from another Netflix original series, 'Mornings Come to Psychiatric Wards.' He reflected, "It wasn't so much about a certain aspect of Seo-wan, but rather my feelings at that time. I believe it was when I was particularly vulnerable. Seo-wan comes to realize that he is not a special person, and I empathized with those feelings so much at that time, so I tried to act as my true self. People around me have often said that my usual self seems to be reflected in my acting."
The praise from Yim Siwan and other distinguished seniors, along with the sparkling moments shared with other actors in the series, were all good motivating factors for Noh Jae-won. He laughed, saying, "I don't feel inferior about my looks," but added, "I often feel inferior about my acting. I still feel inferior while doing this. I don't know how to avoid it. I just think, 'Why are these people so good?' However, when I consider each actor, I find that their sparkling parts are all different, which I envy. I want to believe in myself and try to develop my own sparkle."
