'Hitmaker' Choi Young-joon is anticipated to show a heavy presence in 'The Defects'.
The new ENA Monday-Tuesday drama 'The Defects', which will premiere on the 21st (Monday) at 10 p.m. (directed by Oh Gi-hwan, written by Ahn So-jung, produced by Group Eight and Take One Studio), is an action thriller depicting the desperate survival and revenge of children who barely survive after being abandoned by their foster parents and coming close to death.
In the drama, Choi Young-joon takes on the role of Woo Tae-sik, a henchman for an illegal adoption trafficking organization, who secretly rescues and protects refunded children. Upon discovering the nature of the organization, he becomes consumed by deep guilt and resolves to protect the children at the risk of his own safety, taking on the role of a supporter and teaching the children how to survive.
As expectations grow for Choi Young-joon's performance, he spoke candidly today (9th) about his affection for the Woo Tae-sik character and the preparation process. Choi Young-joon noted, "The subject matter of the work was uncommon and the fast-paced development made the script easy to read," and confidently explained the reason for choosing the project by saying, "The narrative of children, whose lives were determined by others, searching for their true lives was impressive."
He continued by sharing specific aspects he particularly focused on for the Woo Tae-sik character, stating, "Since there are many fierce action scenes, I spent a lot of time pondering how to make those scenes come across more vividly and persuasively," and added, "While outwardly pretending to 'handle' the refunded children, Tae-sik is actually a person who rescues them, so I worked hard to express the balance between his two faces."
Choi Young-joon identified the keywords that can describe the Woo Tae-sik role as 'conscience,' 'guilt,' and 'last chance.' He explained, "Tae-sik is a character who feels compassion for the children while living with the burden of conscience. For the children standing on the brink of death, Tae-sik may have been their last hope and chance in life," revealing his deep affection for the character.
Furthermore, Choi Young-joon spoke about the synergy with actors Yum Jung-ah, Won Jina, Kim Jin-young, and other proven box office stars, saying, "All of them were actors who perfectly embodied their characters. Given the characteristics of the action thriller genre, synergy is crucial, and it really matched well." He added, "I hope the viewers can discover various meanings contained in the title 'The Defects' through the work. Please show lots of interest and expectations for this project that we prepared with our best efforts."
The new ENA Monday-Tuesday drama 'The Defects' will premiere on the 21st at 10 p.m. and will also be available exclusively on the OTT platform TVING.
