Director Jang Seong-ho of 'The King of Kings' shared his thoughts on the dubbing work with domestic actors.
On the afternoon of the 2nd, at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul's Yongsan district, a press screening and media conference for the film 'The King of Kings' (directed by Jang Seong-ho) took place. Director Jang Seong-ho attended the conference and shared his insights.
'The King of Kings' is an animated film that depicts a journey into the greatest story of 2,000 years ago, as narrated by the distinguished British author Charles Dickens, who wrote it alongside his youngest son, Walter. Inspired by Dickens' unpublished manuscript 'The Life of Our Lord,' which he wrote to share with his children and is well-known for works such as 'Oliver Twist' and 'A Christmas Carol,' this film has been produced.
Notably, the Korean dubbing of 'The King of Kings' has garnered attention with popular actors Lee Byung-hun, Jin Seon-kyu, Lee Ha-nee, Yang Dong-geun, Cha In-pyo, Kwon Oh-jung, Jang Kwang, and Choi Ha-ri participating. When asked about this luxurious casting process, Director Jang Seong-ho remarked, "I think it's strangely lucky regarding casting. Amazing actors were cast even in Hollywood. Even those from Hollywood remarked on how such a casting could happen, saying it was a casting that would be difficult to replicate."
He explained, "It seems that they responded positively because it was a good subject and a good piece. The casting wasn't because of the favorable response in the United States, as it was nearly completed before that. Many around me who were interested in the project contributed greatly. Through those individuals, the casting was smoothly completed in a short time. There were also those who recommended actors, and when I proposed them, they almost immediately accepted, leading to a seamless and quick casting process."
When asked about the episodes with domestic actors, he said, "Actor Lee Byung-hun is already such a remarkable actor that there's no need to mention him. In fact, he didn't hold a belief. Nevertheless, during this project, he expressed a newfound interest in the universal story of love and the character of Jesus, which was intriguing. The way he interpreted the character during the performance was enjoyable. Eventually, there were playful exchanges of emotions like slight conflict with his son. They managed to find that rhythm well. That aspect was fascinating."
He also stated, "The other actors were all quite remarkable as well. In particular, with actor Lee Ha-nee, not only is she good at acting, but I discovered that she sings beautifully. Perhaps that's why her voice is so lovely. If she pursues a career as a professional voice actor, she will surely reach the highest level. Actor Jin Seon-kyu, who played Jesus, had a preconceived notion of him because he often portrayed villains. However, his voice is youthful and pure. If you see him against what you might expect, you could feel surprised. Being a theater actor, his vocalization was excellent, and I was very satisfied throughout the work process."
Meanwhile, 'The King of Kings' is set to be released domestically on the 16th.
