Comedian Lee Kyung-kyu has been sent to the prosecution without detention on charges of drug driving.
On the 2nd, the Seoul Gangnam Police announced that Lee Kyung-kyu, who is accused of violating the Road Traffic Act, has been sent to the prosecution without detention.
Previously, on the 8th of last month, Lee Kyung-kyu was accused of driving a car under the influence of prescribed medication in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul. At that time, Lee Kyung-kyu was caught by police who were dispatched after a report of theft suspicion while he was driving another person's car that was the same type and color as his own.
Afterwards, he tested positive in a drug screening test and was investigated by the police. Lee Kyung-kyu claimed that the positive result was due to anxiety disorder medication he has been taking for over 10 years. However, Article 45 of the Road Traffic Act strictly prohibits driving in a state where normal driving is difficult due to the influence of drugs. Even if it is a prescription medication, if it affects cognitive abilities or concentration and one drives without realizing it, it falls under drug driving.
Therefore, on the 24th of last month, the police summoned Lee Kyung-kyu as a suspect for questioning. After the police investigation, Lee Kyung-kyu said, "I did not properly recognize the fact that I should not drive after taking anxiety disorder medication. I once again felt that if there are components in the medication I am taking that may affect driving, I should refrain from driving. I will also be careful in the future," and bowed his head, saying, "I sincerely apologize to the fans who have trusted and supported me for a long time."
Lee Kyung-kyu's lawyer stated through a read statement that, "Mr. Lee has been suffering from anxiety disorder for 10 years and took prescribed medication the day before the incident. However, on that day, his condition worsened, and he ended up driving to the hospital himself," adding, "Ultimately, it was a careless act with no room for excuse, and he feels responsible."
