Director Kim Won-seok of 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' expressed gratitude for the president's heartfelt feedback.
On the 30th, a meeting titled 'The dream of a cultural powerhouse, moving toward a global Korea with leaders of K-culture' was held at the Pine Grass lawn in front of the presidential office, inviting figures from the cultural and artistic community.
Attending the event were the writer Park Cheon-hyu of the musical 'Maybe Happy Ending,' which won six Tony Awards, considered the 'Academy Awards of performance arts,' director Kim Won-seok of the Netflix series 'When Life Gives You Tangerines,' director Hur Ga-young, who won the first prize at the Cannes Film Festival's Cinéfondation with the film 'First Summer,' internationally acclaimed vocalist Jo Su-mi, and ballet dancer Park Yun-jae.
On that day, President Lee Jae-myung and his wife confessed that they were deeply moved after watching 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' and shed tears.
Director Kim Won-seok said, "I think I am the only one among the five who is here today without receiving an award. However, the tears of the president and his wife seem to be the real honor." He added, "I never expected to receive the sympathy and tears of the entire nation. It seems that you liked it more and for a longer time than I thought. People are still talking about it, and I heard recently that they watched it late. I am just grateful."
Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung asked, "How much were you trying to make people cry?" Director Kim Won-seok replied, "In fact, this is the first time I'm saying it here, but I really tried to make it funny. I never intended to make anyone cry. I tried to portray the emotional scenes well, but I never thought it would make people cry." He continued, "Even in very sad scenes, I played non-sad music. I was really trying to make people laugh. Since many people said they cried, it seems to be thought of as a sad drama, so there are still some who haven't watched it. It's really a funny and entertaining drama, so I want to promote it until the end," he said with a smile.
