The fact that the oldest death row inmate in the country died while serving his sentence has been confirmed belatedly. Since he was a figure who caused social shock due to the serious crime of serial murder, there is a quiet focus on his death.
According to a report by Newsis on the 29th, it has been confirmed that a person surnamed Oh, who had been sentenced to death and was serving his sentence for the murder and sexual assault of four tourists, died last year at Gwangju Prison. He was 87 years old. Oh was the oldest death row inmate in the country and has left behind a prominent example of dying in prison.
Oh was arrested for the murder of two university students in their 20s off the coast of Boseong, Jeollanam-do, in 2007, and for luring and killing two women in their 20s at sea about 20 days later. At the time, he was working as a fisherman and lured the victims using his boat before committing brutal acts in the middle of the sea.
The details of the incident emerged as bodies were found successively in the sea. During the investigation, Oh confessed to committing the acts for sexual purposes, and the prosecution sought the death penalty. The court accepted this, sentenced him to death, and the Supreme Court confirmed the sentence in the same year.
Oh, whose death sentence was ultimately confirmed, was referred to as the oldest death row inmate during his time in prison. However, South Korea has effectively suspended the execution of death sentences since 1997. Ultimately, it seems he spent his life as a death row inmate in prison and passed away quietly.
His story was revealed to the world again last year through SBS's "Story of the Day When You Bite Your Tail" (hereafter "Kkokkomu"). Regular guest Shinji noted, "Is it that he pushed the men away because he wanted to chase after the women?" and expressed how desperate and earnest it was for the victims to request help during that time. "The perpetrator is garbage. It's a waste to even swear at him," she said in anger.
