The film 'The omniscient reader's viewpoint' (directed by Kim Byung-woo, provided by Lotte Entertainment and Smilegate, distributed by Lotte Entertainment, produced by Realize Pictures Co., Ltd., co-produced by MYM Entertainment, Smilegate Realize, and The Present Company) has released a film commentary video.
'The omniscient reader's viewpoint' is a fantasy action film where, on the day the novel, serialized for over 10 years, concludes, the story's world becomes reality, and the only reader, 'Kim Reader,' must survive in a devastated world alongside the main character, 'Yu Jung-hyuk,' and his companions. Based on the globally popular mega-hit novel with a vast worldview and compelling narrative, the film 'The omniscient reader's viewpoint' has heightened anticipation with its film commentary video release.
The released film commentary video captures the production team's intense 고민 (concerns) and passion from the film's origin to directorial intentions and adaptation processes in creating a legendary film. Won Dong-yeon, the representative of Realize Pictures, which achieved the double ten-million myth with the 'Along with the Gods' series, noted, "When I first encountered the novel 'The omniscient reader's viewpoint,' I instantly felt captivated and thought it would be great to realize this story." He decided to film it with the belief that this piece, depicting a story of coexistence with peers, should be shared emotionally in one space with many viewers. Director Kim Byung-woo was also attracted to the idea of an "active and participatory story," believing that if the audience's feelings are aligned with (the characters in the movie), then a theatrical film would suit it well.
The production team prioritized elevating cinematic enjoyment and immersion through an adaptation reflecting 'the omniscient audience's viewpoint.' Representative Won Dong-yeon stated that approaching the film while preserving the "worldview, characters, and messages the author intended" was a priority. Director Kim Byung-woo expressed that although every episode is enjoyable, his main 고민 (concern) was about how to weave these stories into one cohesive narrative cinematically. He began designing the story to ensure that it has completeness as a film. Holding the belief that a fantasy worldview should feature characters with both universality and particularity, he started pondering, "If the unique skills or backgrounds of each character are removed, what would happen to these characters?" He added cinematic adaptations based on the notion that providing choices and stories for characters in crisis without backgrounds could build more dramatic tension. The story was structured around characters overcoming crises through their choices and will, while also aiming to maintain the foundation of the fantasy worldview while forming a sense of tension more resonant with reality. Regarding weapon settings, he mentioned, "There are many illustrations with similar weapons in the original, so we granted each character a weapon that could highlight them," ensuring visual design was not neglected so that audiences could experience the action scenes more richly.
The production team hoped the film's message would resonate genuinely with the audience. Director Kim Byung-woo emphasized the work's intended message, saying, "The title is 'The omniscient reader's viewpoint,' but ironically, the reader is never truly alone." Representative Won Dong-yeon sincerely conveyed the meaning of the work, saying, "Through 'The omniscient reader's viewpoint,' wouldn't it be comforting just to think that 'there are people to be with even in anxiety and crisis, and that those people might be right beside me'?" The film 'The omniscient reader's viewpoint', created by numerous staff with deep affection and intense 고민 (concerns), will offer audiences a new cinematic experience with spectacular and dynamic narratives unlike anything seen before.
The film 'The omniscient reader's viewpoint', which allows audiences to experience the beloved global mega-hit on screen, will be available in theaters nationwide on July 23.
