Singer Tiger JK voiced his thoughts on music, creation, and authenticity in the era of AI.
Tiger JK participated as a speaker at the 'AI Startup Festival' held at the Google Startup Campus in Seoul on Nov. 17. This event gathered various technology-based startups and creators to explore the possibilities of convergence between AI and industry. On stage, Tiger JK shared profound insights under the theme of 'The future of the music industry with AI.'
An 'early adopter' artist who regularly utilizes various AI tools, Tiger JK candidly shared vivid experiences at the lecture on the intersection of technology and art, garnering significant response.
Tiger JK emphasized that 'AI is not a threat to creators but rather a tool that allows them to focus on the essence of creation.' He mentioned his experience of incorporating AI into repetitive administrative tasks like contract reviews, document organization, and data collection as a label representative, adding, 'Thanks to that, I've regained time to immerse myself in music work, and personally, I have time to exercise.'
He also introduced cases where he revived past works through AI technology. By inputting childhood lyric notebooks, unreleased songs, and doodles into AI tools, he remixed and arranged them in new ways, some of which were tested in actual performances on overseas stages. Tiger JK explained that 'music, reconstructed modernly while maintaining a 90s sensibility, communicated with the audience in unexpected ways,' and he also shared the sounds created by AI directly at the venue.
Above all, he stressed his philosophy that 'the more we enter the era of AI, the more genuine expressions must be.' Referring to Quincy Jones' words, 'Techniques alone cannot last long. Ultimately, what moves people is sincerity and courage,' he emphasized the importance of an environment for creation where there is no fear of failure. 'I hope music is not evaluated solely on success or failure,' he said, conveying a message that there is an urgent need for a culture that applauds failure and a community that respects diverse attempts.
Finally, he said, 'Now is the best time to imagine and take on challenges. AI is a tool that gives wings to that imagination,' sending heartfelt support to everyone who transcends the boundaries of creation. At the end of the lecture, he wrapped up the stage with a live performance of his representative song 'Monster,' receiving an enthusiastic response.
