Actress Hwang Jung-eum (40) announced that she has repaid the entire amount of approximately 4.3 billion won embezzled from a family corporation she owns.
The agency Y1 Entertainment released an official statement on the 17th, saying, "Ms. Hwang Jung-eum has repaid the entire amount used in the form of an advance from Hoonminjeongeum Entertainment," and "She disposed of her private assets and repaid all on the 30th of last month and the 5th of this month. The financial relationship between Hoonminjeongeum Entertainment and Ms. Hwang Jung-eum has been resolved."
Hwang Jung-eum was previously indicted without detention on charges of embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes. According to the prosecution, she is accused of misappropriating a total of 4.34 billion won of company funds from early 2022 to December, with about 4.2 billion won reportedly used for cryptocurrency investments.
Hoonminjeongeum Entertainment is a one-person corporation of which Hwang Jung-eum holds 100% equity. She acknowledged all the charges at the first hearing held last month.
The agency explained, "Hwang Jung-eum lacked appropriate tax and accounting knowledge as the owner of a one-person corporation, not as a professional manager. She is deeply reflecting on causing public concern." They also stated, "We sincerely apologize once again for causing worry and will ensure to restore trust in a more meticulous and responsible manner, seeking expert help even in minor matters."
Hwang Jung-eum also said, "About 2021, I was advised by people around me to use company funds through coin investments. Although it was company money, since it was revenue earned from my activities, I made an immature decision," and added, "I have repaid a significant portion by disposing of personal assets, and I am in the process of settling some unpaid amounts. I will fulfill my necessary responsibilities."
