In 'Our Unwritten Seoul,' actress Park Bo-young has opened a new horizon in playing dual roles with her delicate acting skills.
Park Bo-young is passionately portraying twin sisters Yu-mi-ji and Yu-mi-rae in the cable channel tvN weekend drama 'Our Unwritten Seoul' (written by Lee Kang, directed by Park Shin-woo).
In the challenging performance that requires depicting characters living completely opposite lives within the same appearance, Park Bo-young is earning rave reviews from viewers by meticulously separating the characters.
In recent broadcasts, the narratives of Mi-ji and Mi-rae, who pause in front of their respective choices, were portrayed. Mi-ji hinted at emotional changes as she gradually closes the distance with Ho-su (played by Park Jin-young). Park Bo-young utilized subtle details such as the speed and spacing of her speech and the tremor in her gaze to delicately express the character's hesitation and emotional texture. Particularly in the dawn terminal scene, she expressed the shift in emotional lines with a brief yet firm response to Ho-su's confession, showcasing Park Bo-young's unique 'controlled focus.'
On the other hand, Mi-rae showed a scene of revisiting the place and direction of her life through a reunion with Seo-jin (played by Ryu Kyung-soo). Rather than directly revealing Mi-rae's emotions, Park Bo-young vividly embodied the character's internal conflict through static movements and dense dialogue. Particularly, while gazing at the stars, she deeply expressed the character's inner feelings with the line, "If I had encountered that during my commute, I would have thought one of those stars was me."
Park Bo-young clearly separated the two characters, 'Mi-ji' and 'Mi-rae,' in every mode of expression, including language, manner of speaking, and response speed. Within the established character structure, she distinguished them without unnecessary emotional excess, completing a rhythmic performance that allows the audience to naturally differentiate the two characters.
Especially in emotional acting, she eliminated exaggerated devices and meticulously organized the emotional gap between the characters while maintaining a consistent overall tone in the play. Consequently, the flow of the drama became smoother, and the emotional trajectories of both Mi-ji and Mi-rae left a deep impression on the viewers.
Through this work, Park Bo-young is proving her unwavering focus even within a complex narrative. As 'Our Unwritten Seoul' advances into the latter half, anticipation is rising for what results the emotional changes of the two characters will bring.
