Actor Park Yong-woo shared his efforts to portray a serial killer.
On the morning of the 12th, a production presentation for the STUDIO X+U drama 'The Hunter with the Scalpel' took place at the Ramada Sindorim Hotel in Guro District, Seoul. Actors Park Joo-hyun, Park Yong-woo, Kang Hoon, and director Lee Jung-hoon attended the event and shared their thoughts.
Based on the novel of the same name by writer Choi I-do, 'The Hunter with the Scalpel' is a crime thriller where a forensic pathologist named Se-hyeon, who discovers the familiar murder methods of his father, a serial killer known as 'The Tailor,' who was thought to have died 20 years ago, embarks on a quest to find him before the police can.
Park Yong-woo plays the role of Yoon Jo-kyun, a psychopath serial killer who is also Se-hyeon's father and is passionate about human anatomy. When asked about the preparations he made for the role of a serial killer, he explained, "I prepared quite a bit for this role. I did a fair amount of research. Since the character is a serial killer, I can't really do anything directly, so a lot of imagination is required for the role, which inevitably necessitated a lot of research."
He noted, "The emotions and expressions drawn from my research also come through in the drama," and added, "I wanted to use a lot of everyday expressions. Since the role requires expressing particularly dramatic and dark emotions, personally, I find that the scariest kind of person is someone who has no guilt and expresses themselves comfortably and ordinarily. I think I spent a lot of time contemplating those aspects."
He continued, "These days, my approach and attitude towards acting is to prepare as little as possible for any role. If I prepare too much, I'll end up performing in a conventional and predictable way. Nowadays, when I'm delivering my lines, I try to feel as if it's my first experience, and I prefer to enjoy the process on set, so I generally try not to research too much, but for this role, I couldn't avoid it."
Park Yong-woo said, "I mostly watched documentaries, and among them, I looked at figures like Jeffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson. There are various common points, but they tend to have a lack of empathy toward others. They deliberately practice socializing through mirrors to get along with others, and since they can't understand others, they intentionally practice acting. I practiced quite a bit through such research. I don't know how the video turned out in the end, but there is a scene that pays homage to one of those figures."
Meanwhile, 'The Hunter with the Scalpel' is set to premiere on the 16th through U+tv, U+mobile tv, and Disney+.
