YouTuber Jabsik Dongnyo (real name Wang Hyun-soo) has deleted both his YouTube channel and social media accounts following controversy over remarks that belittled a region and showed political bias. Despite his apologies and donations, public outrage is not easily quelled.
The incident began on the 5th, when Jabsik Dongnyo posted on his social media. He uploaded a snapshot showing that during the 21st presidential election, Democratic Party of Korea candidate Lee Jae-myung recorded a vote rate of 89.04% in a specific region of Jeollanam-do, adding a mocking comment that read, "Jeollanam-do went crazy, lol." He further escalated the controversy by saying, "If it comes out 80-90% in Jeolla, we really need to split the country. There's no need to live together."
As the post spread through communities and social media, Jabsik Dongnyo responded mockingly to a netizen's comment, saying, "Are you Jeolla person? Seems like you got scraped," pouring oil on the fire.
As public opinion worsened, he posted a lengthy apology on YouTube community on the 6th. He stated that he had caused discomfort to many people with politically biased expressions and belittling comments about a region, saying, "I have had biased thoughts influenced by my environment since childhood, and I deeply reflect on my careless expressions."
On the same day, he donated 5 million won to the May 18 Memorial Foundation and revealed the receipt. He noted, "Donations do not erase my mistakes," and added, "I will live carefully with my words," but criticism directed at him did not subside.
Some netizens reacted by saying, "He is trying to wash his hands with a donation," and "That money has no meaning to the victims," escalating the criticism, and advertisers' 'withdrawal' followed one after another.
An ice cream brand said, "We deeply apologize to those who were hurt by the comments," and distanced itself, stating, "We do not support belittlement and discrimination,' while a restaurant brand also revealed that "we are actually suffering damage from advertising contracts," disclosing facts about content deletion and refund requests.
Ultimately, Jabsik Dongnyo deleted all of his YouTube channel and Instagram accounts. Currently, those accounts are inaccessible, and all videos and posts that were uploaded have disappeared.
Meanwhile, Jabsik Dongnyo is a YouTuber with 180,000 subscribers. He is a creator who introduces restaurants across the country while wearing a dinosaur character costume.
