Two years have passed since BJ A-young (real name Byeon A-young) died in Cambodia. As a Chinese couple has been arrested as suspects, the shock at that time remains vivid.
On June 6, 2023, the corpse of a Korean woman in her 30s was discovered at a construction site in Kandal Province, near Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. At the time of discovery, the body was reportedly found wrapped in a red cloth and abandoned in a puddle. This woman is known to have been an internet broadcaster on a trip to Cambodia, and local media reported that the victim was BJ A-young.
The news was made public about a week after the body was discovered. Local police arrested a Chinese couple in their 30s who owned the hospital on suspicion of abandoning BJ A-young's body. They claimed that BJ A-young suddenly had a seizure and died after receiving an antibody injection at their hospital.
It has been reported that there were severe signs of beating on BJ A-young's body, and Cambodian police investigated whether the hospital operated by the Chinese couple had received official approval from health authorities and whether there were any medical errors during the treatment process. An autopsy procedure was also conducted, and the Korean police demanded a thorough investigation from the Cambodian police.
This case was also examined by SBS 'I Want to Know That.' The production team of 'I Want to Know That' (hereafter referred to as '그알') interviewed experts and local Cambodian police, and the police noted, "The cause of death appears to be suffocation. Thus, we suspected drug side effects at the hospital," adding, "We could not confirm any external injuries such as torture on the body. Although a drug test was conducted, it came back negative. At the time, the victim was not wearing an upper undergarment and had her lower undergarment on backward. Therefore, we suspected sexual assault."
The husband among the Chinese couple arrested and detained in prison for charges such as body abandonment told the production team of '그알,' "He requested an injection, but I did not give it to him. There were already injection marks on his body before that. Since I did not give him the injection, he just fell asleep. Later, I saw he was foaming at the mouth and unconscious, so I administered emergency medicine and provided oxygen, but he died."
He added, "I admit to the body abandonment. I was panicked, scared, and had no money. It is only natural to be punished for abandoning a corpse. But my wife did not know."
Meanwhile, BJ A-young was a popular BJ and influencer with 160,000 subscribers on AfreecaTV and 250,000 followers on Instagram. Three months before her death, she announced that she had liquidated her BJ activities.
