(Following Interview ②) Actor Son Suk-ku explained the controversy surrounding his participation in a fan-operated YouTube channel.
On the afternoon of the 5th, an interview was conducted with Son Suk-ku, the lead actor of the Disney+ original series "Nine Puzzles," at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
"Nine Puzzles" is a mystery thriller that delves into the secrets of a serial murder case that has resurfaced with mysterious puzzle pieces, featuring the only witness of an unsolved case, Lee Na (played by Kim Da-mi), and detective Han Saem (played by Son Suk-ku) who suspects him all the way through.
Earlier, Son Suk-ku caught attention by making a surprise appearance on the 'Jimi Joe' channel operated by his non-celebrity fan last month ahead of the release of "Nine Puzzles." He noted, "It wasn't a big reason. I have been supporting that friend while following their activities. I thought they would do well if they entered this field."
He explained, "While promoting with that friend is important, nowadays I don't know how to interpret that. We use YouTube to effectively inform the public about our work, but these days it feels like a greeting to show the public that I, as a person, am doing this. Perhaps that is what matters more. In that sense, it's good," adding, "We know each other, and I'm a supporter. So there's no reason not to."
However, some have raised concerns about whether it gives an advantage to a specific fan channel or creates controversy over favoritism and discrimination. In response, Son Suk-ku explained, "In the case of Mr. Jimi Joe, he is my fan, but he is also a proper professional YouTuber. We met as fans and an actor, but I appeared as a guest on one person's YouTube channel."
He emphasized, "Emotionally, people might think that way, but logically, it is not. What I want you to understand is that I treat my fans the same way even if they come to my filming location. There is no discrimination just because someone is from somewhere. Those who have met me on the street or in private will not think that way."
Regarding his appearance on Choo Sung Hoon's channel, he remarked, "The production team said I'm quite similar to him in a personal way. They said I'm the type who loves to show off what I've done. I didn't know I was like that, but they say I am. It was fun. I think we might see each other often in social settings. He doesn't do YouTube just for the sake of doing YouTube.
