(Interview ④ follows) The winner of 'Devil's Plan 2,' Jung Hyun-kyu, revealed his prize money and plans following the victory.
On the morning of the 27th, an interview took place at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, with Director Jung Jong-yeon of the Netflix original variety show 'Devil's Plan: Death Room' (abbreviated as 'Devil's Plan 2') and winner Jung Hyun-kyu.
'Devil's Plan 2' is a brain survival game variety show where players from various professions stay together for seven days to determine the best brain. It concluded with Jung Hyun-kyu's victory after the final episode aired on the 20th.
Initially, 'Devil's Plan 2' was anticipated as a new project by Director Jung Jong-yeon, who pioneered the survival variety genre with the 'The Genius' series. However, after its conclusion, criticism has largely dominated public opinion. Viewers have expressed resentment over Jung Hyun-kyu's victory process, particularly as some contestants, including Kyu-hyun and Yoon So-hee, are perceived to have emotionally over-defended Jung Hyun-kyu.
Jung Hyun-kyu said, "After seeing the viewers' reactions following the broadcast, I asked myself a lot. I sincerely devoted myself to winning, and I take responsibility for the discomfort caused to various people and the viewers during that process. I reflected a lot while observing those reactions. I believe that the uncomfortable feelings are also my responsibility."
He stated, "The key to my victory was not just that I performed well, but that I did my best in the situation and that the people around me also helped, and I think luck played a big part. What I realized in winning is that how sincerely I convey my feelings to people is important. I am reflecting on that part."
Regarding receiving support from Kyu-hyun and Yoon So-hee, Jung Hyun-kyu said, "As we continued to play the game together, I thought it would be great if the three of us, including Kyu-hyun hyung and So-hee nuna, could compete based on our skills. During the 9th episode of 'Mankala', both nuna and hyung left, and there was a strong camaraderie at that time. I think my request led to hyung and nuna being criticized because of me," he expressed regret.
Regarding the prize money of 380 million won, Jung Hyun-kyu said, "I received it after the program ended. I don't have any specific plans yet, but I want to treat the cast to something delicious and use it for that; since I caused harm to the program and the viewers, I plan to donate a portion later." He added, "I initially thought about donating, but on YouTube, the hosts must avoid revealing how the winner would spend it to prevent identifying the winner, which is why I mentioned it that way." To this, Director Jung Jong-yeon added, "From the production team's perspective, we strongly advise against donations. It's up to his discretion, though."
In conclusion, Jung Hyun-kyu said about his future steps, "This incident has led me to reflect a lot on myself. I realized that I am still immature and imperfect. I plan to take some time alone to heal. I don't have specific plans for broadcasting or entertainment activities in the future." He added, "I sincerely devoted myself more than anyone else. I apologize for having a negative impact on many people during the process. I will strive to grow well."
