The warm hosting of Kim Jeong-yeon and Jung Beom-kyun was evaluated as the driving force leading to the 100th episode of 'Our Golden Calf.'
On the broadcast of KBS1 on the 25th, Na Eun-hee from the KBS Viewer Evaluation Committee appeared to reflect on the meaning of 'Our Golden Calf' (hereafter referred to as 'Golden Calf'), which recently celebrated its 100th episode. That day, Na introduced 'Golden Calf' as 'a regionally customized talk variety program that shares various stories and the values of old treasured items through consigned cherished items.'
After summarizing the format of 'Golden Calf,' which directly evaluates consignments introduced weekly by experts, including antiques and modern historical materials, it gifts the consigner a solid gold calf model based on the evaluation results and shares the joy of viewers who have won unexpected gifts. This was speculated to be the driving force allowing 'Golden Calf' to continue to its 100th episode.
Another feature that empowered the program is the storytelling strategy. Na noted, 'The narrative method, which focuses on the heartfelt stories behind the items before appraising the prices of the collections, is an element of empathy that evokes laughter and tears while watching 'Golden Calf.' While the appraisal value reaching tens of millions of won attracts attention, it conveys a value beyond that and encourages people to take a step back from materialism and find mental relaxation.'
Chief Producer Maeng Nam-joo explained in a written interview, 'We are careful about regional distribution to ensure that shooting does not lean towards a specific area. We also strive to contribute even a little to the local economy through the introduction of historical sites.' He added that by focusing on the stories of the participants rather than the value of the collections, he aimed to continue the tradition of Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) as a public broadcaster full of warmth, like 'My Home at 6' or 'Neighborhood Tour.'
The point that Na highlighted about 'Golden Calf' was the hosts. Na noted, 'Singer Kim Jeong-yeon and comedian Jung Beom-kyun lead the program through intimate communication with the participants. Their efforts to ensure that ordinary people who are not used to the camera can naturally blend into the filming are noticeable. At the same time, their respect and consideration for the elderly are also memorable.'
Lastly, he added that although it is regrettable that most of the participants are limited to the elderly, if opportunities for the younger generation, who have moved to rural areas, are created, it could foster a more active space for empathy and communication. He expressed his hope that 'Golden Calf,' which enjoys communication with participants and leads encounters with viewers, would not settle for 100 episodes but become a representative long-running program reaching 200, 300 episodes.
