Actor Kim Hyang-gi, loved since childhood, has now grown significantly and is challenging herself on the theatrical stage. After about 20 years since her debut, Kim Hyang-gi is stepping into a new acting world through her first play, "Shakespeare in Love."
Kim Hyang-gi will take the stage as the protagonist Viola de Lesseps in the play "Shakespeare in Love," which will open on July 5 at the CJ Towol Theatre of the Seoul Arts Center. This work holds even greater significance for Kim Hyang-gi as it marks her first challenge in theater.
"Shakespeare in Love" is based on the film of the same name that swept the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and British Academy Film Awards. It humorously narrates the background to the creation of Shakespeare's classic, "Romeo and Juliet." The play is expected to showcase how Kim Hyang-gi's delicate and deepened acting ability shines on stage, containing a narrative that traverses themes of love and art, as well as freedom and reality.
Having captivated audiences with her clear and transparent emotions in films like "My Mind..." and the "Along with the Gods" series during her childhood, Kim Hyang-gi has matured into a deeper and more sophisticated actress through dramas such as "Moment of Eighteen" and "Joseon Psychiatrist Yoo Se-poong." She is now expanding her own acting world with a more solid inner performance, moving beyond the title of child actress.
In this play, Kim Hyang-gi portrays Viola de Lesseps, an aristocratic woman with a passion for acting and a longing for freedom, who serves as Shakespeare's muse and drives the play's most significant narrative. Kim Hyang-gi expressed her aspiration, stating, "I want to sincerely express Viola's passion and longing for freedom," and she is determined to infuse her unique colors into this unfamiliar stage of theater.
With upcoming releases such as the Netflix series "Cashier" and the short-form drama "Can Ghosts Be Laundered?" Kim Hyang-gi is poised to showcase her talents across screens and television, now throwing herself into the new challenge of theater to demonstrate her remarkable growth once again.
From a young girl to a confident protagonist, Kim Hyang-gi is writing another chapter in her acting life. Expectations are high for the emotions and aftereffects her first theatrical performance will bring.
