Netflix has confirmed the production of a new series, 'The Rat,' and revealed the casting lineup of Ryu JunYeol and Sul KyungGu. 'The Rat' is a thriller that depicts the story of a reclusive novelist, 'Moon Jae,' who teams up with a loan shark, 'Noja,' to pursue an unknown 'rat' that has taken everything from him in an instant.
A reclusive writer, 'Moon Jae.' One day, suddenly, the fingerprint recognition on his phone fails, and even the friend who used to cover for him disappears. With no way left to prove he is 'Moon Jae,' he learns that the unknown 'rat' has taken his name, identity, and property, and he begins to chase after the 'rat' to reclaim what he lost. The series is based on a Kakao webtoon of the same name, inspired by a folktale where 'if a rat eats nails, it becomes a person.' Netflix's 'The Rat' promises to deliver a gripping story that follows the hidden truth amidst the chaos where the lines between reality and illusion are blurred.
The talented actors Ryu JunYeol and Sul KyungGu elevate the quality of the work. Ryu JunYeol, who perfectly embodies characters with his unique flair in various works, including Netflix's 'Revelations,' Netflix's series 'The 8 Show,' the films 'Night Owl,' 'Drug King,' and 'Little Forest,' plays the role of the reclusive novelist 'Moon Jae,' who lives in isolation due to social anxiety. 'Moon Jae,' who leads a quiet and repetitive daily life, is stripped of everything by the unknown 'rat,' leaving him in dire circumstances overnight. Ryu JunYeol's intense acting to portray 'Moon Jae's' internal turmoil is highly anticipated.
Additionally, Sul KyungGu, who leaves a strong impression in every work with his deep gaze and irreplaceable presence in Netflix series 'Windfall,' series 'Hyper Knife,' and films 'Ordinary Family,' 'Kingmaker,' and 'Jasan Eobo,' portrays the loan shark 'Noja,' who will stop at nothing to obtain money. While tracking 'Moon Jae,' who vanished after borrowing money, 'Noja' encounters 'Moon Jae,' who reveals himself after three years, and agrees to assist him in uncovering the identity of the 'rat' in exchange for getting his money back.
Sul KyungGu will portray the cold yet dangerous character 'Noja' with his characteristic heavy and profound acting, adding gravity to the story. This marks the first collaboration between actors Ryu JunYeol and Sul KyungGu, and as they unintentionally end up chasing the 'rat' together, the intense synergy between 'Moon Jae' and 'Noja,' who becomes embroiled in a conspiracy, heightens expectations.
Directed by Kim HongSun, who has showcased exceptional directing skills in genre works such as the Netflix series 'Dear Hongrang,' 'Money Heist: Joint Economic Area,' and the K-Occult drama 'The Guest,' the script is penned by Lee JaeGon, who expertly demonstrated the essence of traditional crime dramas with 'Special Investigation Team TEN' and has created compelling character-driven narratives in works including Netflix's 'The Model Family.'
The collaboration between director Kim HongSun, skilled in thrillers, crime, and mystery, and writer Lee JaeGon raises expectations for the high-quality thriller 'The Rat,' which is set to captivate audiences worldwide. Furthermore, Kakao Entertainment, known for its exceptional production know-how in webtoon and web novel-based dramas such as Netflix's 'Karma' and 'The Current Call,' along with CJES Studio and H-House, is set to produce the series, generating even more anticipation.
'The Rat,' featuring the refreshing collaboration between reliable actors Ryu JunYeol and Sul KyungGu, and the expertise of genre veterans director Kim HongSun and writer Lee JaeGon, will be released on Netflix.
