Due to the new dress code announced by the Cannes Film Festival, actress Halle Berry had to abandon her planned outfit.
With the opening of the 77th Cannes International Film Festival in 2025 approaching, the festival organizing committee suddenly announced a new dress code prohibiting "nude outfits" and "voluminous train dresses." This was followed by an explanation that it was a measure to "maintain dignity" on the red carpet.
This regulation immediately affected the actors. Halle Berry, attending in the capacity of a juror, noted at a press conference, "I had to give up the Gaurav Gupta dress I was going to wear tonight. The train was too large and violated the festival regulations," adding, "I had no choice but to change direction. But I think that prohibiting the nude look is a good decision."
The dress she originally intended to wear featured a voluminous train, but she chose a dramatic black-and-white striped dress from Jacquemus for the red carpet that day. While the pink ruffle was a focal point, the dress showcased a much more restrained silhouette.
The festival organizers stated regarding the change in the dress code, "Prohibiting full nudity is stipulated in French law and the festival charter," warning, "If voluminous clothing obstructs the movement of other audience members or complicates the seating arrangement in the screening room, entry may be denied."
Halle Berry has been named to this year's Cannes jury, chaired by Juliette Binoche, and is active alongside Jeremy Strong, director Hong Sang-soo, director Payal Kapadia, and actress Alba Rohrwacher.
Meanwhile, Halle Berry had previously made a daring appearance at the Met Gala in a striped and sequined dress by LaQuan Smith. This change to a more conservative look at Cannes sends a message to stars that "regulations" take precedence over dresses.
