Singer Yoon Hyun-sook met a child who has type 1 diabetes like herself.
On the 12th, a video titled "Finally..! I met Hyun-sook's first diabetes mate, and she's even an elementary school student! Feat. Stopped filming because I cried too much..(warning: tears)" was uploaded on the channel 'Between Fun and No Fun.'
On this day, Yoon Hyun-sook met 4th grade elementary student Jo Ah-hyun. She revealed, "I saw her dancing on Instagram, and I was really surprised to find out that this child has type 1 diabetes and wanted to meet her."
Yoon Hyun-sook prepared sandwiches, Keto gimbap, and tteokbokki for Jo Ah-hyun, and they enjoyed a picnic together. She asked, "How did you find out you had diabetes? When did you realize it?" Jo Ah-hyun replied, "It's been 2 years." Yoon Hyun-sook empathized, saying, "It's similar to what I went through. 2023," and inquired, "Do you remember which month it was?"
Jo Ah-hyun showed that she remembered the exact date, saying, "January 22," and when asked about her feelings at that time, she shared, "I felt wronged and upset. At first, I didn't know, but while I was hospitalized, I couldn't eat snacks freely, which made me really upset." Now she's fine and when asked, "Have you ever told your friends? What did they say?" she replied, "They were surprised and said to tell them if it was too hard."
Hearing this, Yoon Hyun-sook was choked up and teared up. She said, "I felt the same way. It was really upsetting. I wondered why this happened to me. So I can understand how you feel." She then asked, "Was your mom also struggling?" Jo Ah-hyun responded, "Mom cried every day while I was hospitalized."
Jo Ah-hyun's mother recalled, "On the holiday of 2023, she started losing weight from a month before. I thought it wasn't a big deal. But on the holiday, she couldn't get up. I thought it was strange, really strange, so I took her to the hospital, and they said to start with a blood test. They suspected type 1 diabetes and told us to go quickly to a university hospital. We went right in. When the doctor talked to us, all we heard was diabetes. I didn't know anything. After spending a day or two in the hospital, it gradually became a reality."
She said, "I had to manage it with injections and couldn't drink my favorite milk, so it broke my heart when I cried for wanting milk. I felt lost. What should I do? I kept thinking that. When it was time to be discharged, I was so scared that I told my doctor I needed to stay a few more days. I didn't have the confidence to care for myself outside, and the doctor said, 'If you think about it easily, it's an easy problem. You need to face it.' I was discharged, and the moment I left was like going to hell."
Yoon Hyun-sook asked, "Have you ever not eaten because you were worried your blood sugar would go up?" and Jo Ah-hyun answered, "It's not that I didn't eat because I was worried it would go up, but because I didn't want to get the injection. It hurts when you get the needle." Yoon Hyun-sook inquired, "Isn't there a pump that you can use automatically?" The mother replied, "She's too young for that. It's also a bit scary. Since it's a machine, there have been people who malfunctioned and had to go to the hospital. I'm too scared to let her use it. Maybe later when she gets older and wants to."
Yoon Hyun-sook continued, "What was the most uncomfortable thing about school life? Was there anything particularly uncomfortable?" Jo Ah-hyun replied, "Not now, but in 2nd grade, when I had to get an injection in class, there was a teacher's assistant next to me, and the boys kept staring at me getting the injection, saying it was scary, and they avoided me every time I went to school, which made me feel sad."
Yoon Hyun-sook comforted her, saying, "Everyone feels that way at first. If we didn't have it, we would have felt surprised when we saw someone else with it too." Then she asked, "Is there anything you want to do in the future? You used to do YouTube, Instagram, dance, and want to be a pianist. What do you want to do?"
In response, Jo Ah-hyun, who was deep in thought, said, "I want to have a pancreas transplant." Hearing this, Yoon Hyun-sook burst into tears. She said, "I'm sorry. I'm being too emotional. There will be a day when that happens. I believe that day will come, so for now, just focus on doing everything you want to do and live well. It seems like this happened to give us a special dream and hope. I hope you think that way too."
She added, "It's really upsetting to hear a child say that they want something like this. At this age, they should be saying they want to be a celebrity or what they want to do, and they shouldn't be imagining such things."
Meanwhile, Yoon Hyun-sook revealed in a YouTube video last year, "I went through another trial in the U.S. My weight dropped to 38 kg, and when I went to the hospital, I was diagnosed with diabetes. They told me that I have congenital type 1 diabetes and that I should live regularly, avoid sugary foods, exercise, and eat three proper meals."
