Seohyun, a member of Girls' Generation and an actress, is embodying a novel.
The new drama on KBS 2TV airing on June 11, titled 'The First Night With the Duke' (written by Jeon Seon-young and directed by Lee Woong-hee and Kang Soo-yeon), is a romantic fantasy drama where the soul of an ordinary female college student inhabits the side character of a romance novel and unfolds a 'no brakes' romance as she spends a night with the story's most obsessive male lead.
In the drama, Seohyun plays a side character who embodies both status and wealth in a romance novel set in the Joseon Dynasty. The side character, who lived with no presence, is reborn as a completely different individual when the soul of a passionate reader, a real-life female college student K, inhabits her.
K, who was satisfied watching the protagonists' story from the closest place in the side character's body, gradually becomes a central figure in the novel as she becomes entangled in an unexpected incident. The question arises whether K, who has entered the side character's body, can restore the story to its original direction, as interest focuses on the unpredictable actions of the side character infused with modern sensibilities.
The released photos sequentially capture the transformation from the real-life female college student K to the in-novel character, the side character. First, K, wearing glasses and a hoodie while reading a web novel, shows an expressionless face that reflects the tedium of repetitive daily life. In contrast, the side character, with K's soul, has an intriguing smile, raising expectations for her activities as she steps up from a side character to a protagonist.
Particularly, attention is drawn to Seohyun's transformation in acting that delicately depicts the changes in K, the side character in the novel, and the side character after K's embodiment. Seohyun noted, "I was drawn to the charm of the characters who are both comic and intense, along with the inter-character stories," explaining her reason for choosing the work.
She further described the side character by saying, "Although she was hurt by people in modern times, after embodying the novel, she briefly panics but accepts that moment as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She is a character who grows through numerous experiences and challenges," reflecting how the side character, who dreamed of a new life, lives a completely opposite daily life after meeting K's soul.
Thus, Seohyun revealed that she prepared distinct characters for the real-life female college student K, the side character before embodiment, and the side character who became a protagonist after embodiment. "The modern K has a pessimistic side but is a compassionate person; the pre-embodiment side character is set as a character full of emptiness in a monotonous life, while the post-embodiment side character freely expresses actions she couldn't take in reality, as she realizes she's in a novel," she explained, highlighting her detailed efforts to complete the stories of K and the side character. The drama will air on June 11 at 9:50 p.m.
