As beloved broadcaster Lee Sang-yong, known as 'The Man from Nowhere,' passed away on the 9th, his warm acts of kindness during his lifetime are once again drawing attention.
On the morning of the 12th, his funeral was held at the Catholic University of Korea Seoul St. Mary's Hospital in Seocho, Seoul. He was 81 years old. The burial site was decided to be Yongin Park.
He collapsed while returning to the hospital after going for a cold and was sent to the hospital, but sadly passed away. Born in 1944 in Seocho, South Chungcheong Province, he was a former Army officer. He debuted as a host in 1971 on CBS Christian Broadcasting, earned the nickname 'The Man from Nowhere' through KBS's *"Let's Gather and Sing"* in 1975, and enjoyed nationwide popularity as the host of the 'Stage of Friendship.'
After his passing, his life as the real 'The Man from Nowhere' is being highlighted online.
In particular, many were moved by his unique way of donating. The late Lee Sang-yong was known to take out 100 bills of 1,000 won from the bank every day and distribute them to 100 people, spending about 3 million won on acts of kindness each month.
In a 2022 broadcast of MBN's *"Exclusive World,"* he was seen limping to the bank to withdraw new bills and handing out two or three bills to restaurant workers, shoemakers, street vendors, and elderly people collecting waste, referring to it as "bonus money." He said, "Depending on the situation, I give out 2, 5, or 20 bills, spending about 300,000 won a day, or 3 million won a month. I cannot ignore those who are noticeably struggling."
In fact, a restaurant employee stated on the show, "He always carries new money in his pocket to share with those in need," and online users expressed their condolences, calling him a hero who would rush to help whenever someone yelled, "Save me, The Man from Nowhere."
