Chef Lu Ching Lai spoke about his difficult past.
On the 6th, during the broadcast of TV CHOSUN's 'Dad and Me,' Chef Lu Ching Lai reminisced about his childhood with his son, Chef Yeomin.
Lu Ching Lai said that after losing his father, his mother raised him while running a makgeolli business alone. Lu Ching Lai noted, "I really lived in poverty during my childhood. By the time I graduated from middle school, my mother told me to stop studying here and to follow her to Seoul to learn a skill," and he began formally learning to cook at the age of 17.
Lu Ching Lai recalled, "Since I worked as a salaried employee up to the position of head chef, I thought that was not the end and that I needed to develop further." Lu Ching Lai said he started working early to make ends meet and lived frugally. Lu Ching Lai stated, "At that time, my first salary was 6,000 won a month."
Lu Ching Lai said, "At 17, I made handmade noodles. At that time, my salary was 12,000 won. I rarely had a day off each month."
Yeomin said, "My grandmother used to tell me that your dad grew up in a difficult environment. At that time, I thought there was no one who didn't struggle as a child. But hearing this story today, I truly think he lived diligently."
Yeomin noted, "Hearing about today makes me reflect a lot on myself."
Lu Ching Lai said, "I am sharing this in the hope that you would understand your father. I started with nothing and really worked hard," adding, "It's not that I want you to work hard, but rather I hope you can understand where I am coming from."
