Singer Lee Seung-gi, whose romantic life and marriage have been tumultuous, ultimately chose a 'cut-off' ending. He declared that he would sever ties with his wife, actress Lee Da-in's family, as he found it difficult to restore trust.
On the 29th, Lee Seung-gi stated through his agency Big Planet Made, "While a fine was imposed during the retrial regarding the legal issues that had been continuously raised against my father-in-law, I have recently found myself in a situation where I am again being prosecuted by investigative authorities due to similar illegal activities. As someone who has waited for results based on trust within the family, I can hardly contain my devastation over my father-in-law's misconduct."
Lee Seung-gi continued, "I deeply regret having made careless remarks without thoroughly examining matters related to my father-in-law last year. I believe that there must be appropriate punishment for illegal activities, and I sincerely apologize for the pain caused to the victims who have suffered due to my hasty judgment. I am also filled with regret towards everyone who believed in and understood me."
Lee Seung-gi then announced that he would sever ties with his in-laws. He said, "This incident has severely damaged the trust within the family, and after long deliberation, my spouse and I wish to cut off our relationship with my in-laws," adding, "Going forward, I will live with a commitment to uphold correct values and take responsibility for a healthy society." He also apologized once again for causing concern and disappointment to fans and the public due to his personal matters. Lee Seung-gi's declaration to sever ties with his in-laws reflected his firm and resolute stance.
Lee Seung-gi's father-in-law, actor Gyun Mi-ri's husband Mr. A, was indicted for artificially inflating stock prices while running a KOSDAQ-listed company from November 2014 to February 2016 and selling shares obtained through a capital increase, securing a profit of about 2.37 billion won. In connection with this, the court sentenced Mr. A to 4 years in prison and a fine of 2.5 billion won, while his co-manager Mr. B received 3 years in prison and a fine of 1.2 billion won. However, the appellate court found that the disclosure regarding the funding of stock and convertible bond acquisition by Mr. B and others could not be considered as a 'material matter' under the Capital Markets Act regarding fraudulent trading, leading to a not guilty verdict. Subsequently, the Supreme Court deemed that there were errors in the second trial's ruling last June and decided to overturn it.
As controversy and interest grew over family matters, Lee Seung-gi showed a cautious stance when questioned about controversies related to his father-in-law at the production press conference for the film 'Big Family' last November, saying, "'My in-law's business is my in-law's business.' Now that I am married, my wife is independent from her family and we have established our own independent household." He indicated that since Lee Da-in had already gained independence after their marriage, he would not disclose his position regarding matters concerning his in-laws.
However, as Mr. A was fined for stock manipulation and later faced charges again for similar activities, Lee Seung-gi had to change his stance. Although he had referred to his in-laws as an 'independent family,' the repeated incidents ultimately led him to choose a 'cut-off' ending. Lee Seung-gi decided to sever ties with his in-laws, which had been a controversial issue since he began dating Lee Da-in publicly in May 2021.
