The recent news of singer Yoo Seung-jun (Steve Yoo), who was banned from entry due to a military service evasion controversy, has attracted attention.
Recently, a post titled 'Yoo Seung-jun's American life exposed by a Korean in LA' claiming to share updates about him has spread across online communities.
The author, identified as person A, who claims to have lived in Los Angeles, stated about Yoo Seung-jun, 'When he grants at local community events or night stages in Cerritos, LA, he still introduces himself as 'Korea's superstar' and then sings 'Passion', 'Scissors', 'Na Na Na', etc.
He continued, 'When there are no events, he goes to the gym and spends the day surfing in places like Fairfax, Huntington Beach or Malibu with his kids, or skating.'
He also raised questions, saying, 'Yoo Seung-jun's father defended him by saying he would even send him to West Point (the U.S. military academy), but he hasn't even gone there. I don't understand why he is trying so hard to come back to Korea while doing well in America.'
He added, 'I truly dislike that I was a fan during my middle and high school years, and I'm just annoyed that I bought everything from his 1st album to his 4th album.' He expressed frustration, saying, 'He seems stuck in the 1990s and lacks awareness. Just wearing a snapback backward and a Bart Simpson T-shirt won't make him younger again. Even if he comes back to Korea now, he won't be able to do anything, so I wish he would just stay in America, work out, grant at night stages singing 'Na Na Na', surf, skateboard, and eat oranges in Orange County.'
Korean-American Yoo Seung-jun debuted in the music industry in 1997 with 'I love you, noona' and gained great popularity with many hit songs and various entertainment activities, including 'Scissors', 'Na Na Na', 'Passion', 'Vision', and 'I hope to find you'. However, after leaving the country for a performance in 2002 and obtaining U.S. citizenship, suspicions of military service evasion arose, leading the Ministry of Justice to impose a ban on his entry.
Afterwards, Yoo Seung-jun applied for a visa as a Korean resident at the Los Angeles Consulate but was denied. He filed a cancellation lawsuit and won a final victory at the Supreme Court in November 2023, but the Los Angeles Consulate is still refusing to issue a visa to Yoo Seung-jun. Meanwhile, last month, the Administrative 5th Division of the Seoul Administrative Court held the first hearing for the lawsuit Yoo Seung-jun filed against the Los Angeles Consulate and the Ministry of Justice for the cancellation of the visa issuance denial and confirmation of the nonexistence of the entry ban.
This lawsuit is Yoo Seung-jun's third administrative lawsuit against the government, following those filed in 2015 and 2020. On the day of the hearing, he posted a video expressing his feelings, stating, 'Everyone should be equal before the law. Is that really the case? Am I exhausted? I wanted to give up many times, but I couldn't give up because I loved it. Now, 23 years have passed.'
On the 1st of this month, Yoo Seung-jun, who celebrated his 28th anniversary since debut, said, 'I really didn't know I would receive so much love. I also truly didn't know I would disappoint and hurt you so much. Back then, I was young, fearless, and recklessly confident. I was foolish, looking back now. After just a little over 5 years of activity, it's been 23 years of separation from you all. I'm sorry for not being able to show you a better appearance, and for creating a reality where I can't even say I'm a fan of Yoo Seung-jun in Korea. I feel like I have only brought disappointment and regret.'
He expressed his gratitude, saying, 'Thank you. Because of your abundant love and encouragement, which taught me so much, I am still living as Yoo Seung-jun today. Who knows what the future holds. Just as we didn't know we were going to be apart for so long, I hope we can meet again someday. I will live dreaming of that day. I pray that the day will come when the frozen wounds melt away just like the snow.'
Meanwhile, on the 27th, he suddenly uploaded a photo with veteran trot singer Tae Jin-ah, stating, 'I love you, Tae Jin-ah, the senior trot singer,' sparking heated discussions.
