Amid the ongoing trial for 'drug charges,' actor Yoo Ah-in has been nominated for the Directors' Cut Awards, with organizing committee chair Min Kyu-dong sharing his thoughts.
Min Kyu-dong, director of the film 'The Old Woman with the Knife,' met with reporters at a cafe in the Sogyeok-dong area of Jongno, Seoul, on the 29th and answered relevant questions. Yoo Ah-in is nominated for the Best Actor award at the 22nd Directors' Cut Awards for his role in 'Victory,' competing against Robert Pattinson from 'Mickey17,' Yoon Joo-sang from 'Morning Sea Gulls,' Lee Byung-hun from 'Victory,' and Choi Min-sik from 'Tomb Robbery.'
The problem lies in the fact that he has been charged with violating the law on the management of narcotic drugs after using propofol 181 times between 2020 and 2022 and illegally obtaining sleeping pills 44 times under another person's name from 2021 to 2022.
In the earlier appeal, he was sentenced to one year in prison, with a two-year probation, a fine of 2 million won, a forfeiture of 1,548,000 won, 80 hours of community service, and 40 hours of drug treatment lectures, and was released. However, the prosecution has filed for an appeal, and he is now awaiting a Supreme Court ruling.
Regarding this, Director Min Kyu-dong explained, 'The Directors' Cut Awards are similar to the Academy Awards in the United States. Each person can only vote once. The nominees are all films that have been released, and each director selected one person. It seems that recent works have a significant influence on directors, which is likely why they voted that way. The results can't be manipulated.'
He added, 'Perhaps Yoo Ah-in reminds us of the late Lee Sun-kyun, whom we also sadly said goodbye to, leaving lingering feelings. I think there might be an intention to give him another opportunity. It seems that there are various perspectives, with some reacting strongly. It feels like the subconscious of many directors has combined. I hope you can see this as a diverse spectrum of opinions.'
Meanwhile, the 23rd Directors' Cut Awards, which will be held at 7 p.m. on May 20, will target films and drama series released between January 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, by DGK regular and associate members.
