Actor Kim Hyun-sook confessed her feelings toward her mother on 'Sokpuri Show Dongchimi.'
In the episode aired on the 26th, Kim Hyun-sook appeared as a guest on the MBN entertainment program 'Sokpuri Show Dongchimi (abbreviated as Dongchimi).' She shared, 'It took me 46 years to hear my mother say thank you.'
Kim Hyun-sook said, "Now my mother has remarried, but I also had my biological father. My biological father was skilled in drinking and indulging in pleasures. When I opened my eyes in the morning, my father was never in his place. When I asked, 'Where's Dad?' my mother would always say, 'Dad is on duty.' My mother would sometimes play with us on weekends, wanting a family-oriented father. But since that didn't happen, she got divorced," she revealed about her childhood family history.
She noted, "My mother was a single parent and had to raise three children, so it was very difficult economically, and I wanted to pursue the arts, but we couldn't afford it. I wanted to go to theater school, and my brother wanted to go to medical school. They say studying medicine takes about 15 years. My mother said, 'I think your brother can manage somehow, but you need to make your own money to go.'"
Kim Hyun-sook said, "So during my gap year, I did every odd job imaginable. I worked in the food service industry almost exclusively. At that time, I was paid 1,800 won an hour. Even working non-stop, my monthly envelope didn't exceed 650,000 won. Nevertheless, I gave the envelope to my mother every time. I hoped to hear, 'You've worked so hard, thank you, and it's been tough.' But I never heard that once. Instead, restaurant aunts would say, 'Where can you find a child like you?' This created a lingering resentment in me."
He continued, "After that, I was experiencing musicals and was fortuitously recognized for the character of 'Gaegeu Concert' as a childbirth drama character. With earnings from broadcasting, my joy was sending money to my mother. For example, if I earned 30 million won, I would send 29.6 million won to her. I left 400,000 won for the rooftop room rent and gave her everything else," revealing that nearly 99% of his income was devoted to his family.
Yet, his mother rarely expressed phrases like 'thank you' or any show of affection. Kim Hyun-sook shared, "But when I had a child, at my mother's age of 74, she started telling me, 'I'm grateful to you.'"
Kim Hyun-sook revealed her thoughts regarding the response of the 'Dongchimi' panel, saying, "I also think there is a bit of a problem since my family never told me to do that. However, since I did it myself and never heard my family say thank you, it makes me angry. As I grew older, I realized I hadn't done well either."
Finally, he said, "Now I just try to do well while my mother is alive. Nowadays, my mother expresses herself very well. Whenever something happens, she says, 'It's all thanks to you.' Recently, she has resolved all the accumulated feelings from the last 40-some years, saying, 'It's all my fault.'"
Kim Hyun-sook, born in Busan in 1978, debuted in 2001 with the film 'Friends.' While active as an actor, she caught the attention of comedian Park Jun-hyung in 2005 and joined 'Gaegeu Concert' as a childbirth drama character, gaining much affection. She continued her acting career in the 'My Lovely Kim Sam-soon' series in the title role. Additionally, she met her ex-husband in 2014 and started a family, giving birth to one son but divorced after six years in 2020 and is raising her son alone.
