The group Melomance candidly revealed their two years of discord.
On the 23rd, a video titled 'Melomance | "I even blocked them... turn off the camera!" | Melomance discord rumors, Melomance reconciliation story, debut of new song, reverse driving icon' was released on Park Na-rae's YouTube channel 'Narae's Table.'
In the video, Park Na-rae visited Melomance's studio to host 'Narae's Table.' Park Na-rae approached them warmly while recalling memories from when they met through 'Sugar Man.'
Kim Min-seok and Jung Dong-hwan of Melomance are also classmates from Seoul Institute of the Arts, Class of 2010. Park Na-rae asked, "Is it not easy to meet someone who fits well while doing the same work and becoming friends? Have you ever thought, 'I can't work with this person'?"
In response, Kim Min-seok said, "We were really not on good terms. The more successful we became, the deeper the rift grew. Since it was the first time we received so much attention, we started to think, 'Was that attention someone's equity?"
Melomance particularly mentioned that the conflict deepened after 'Gift' did well. Park Na-rae also revealed that she noticed the discord between the two during 'Sugar Man,' saying, "When we rehearsed, we came out together, but the timing was slightly different. We were on the same path but felt like we were going in opposite directions."
According to Melomance, the two experienced such conflict that they did not even eat together. Jung Dong-hwan shared, "There were times when we had to eat together at places like highway rest areas, but we would sit as far apart as possible." He added, "I feel bad saying this, but I had blocked (the messenger)." Park Na-rae urged, "Turn off the camera. Everyone get out."
Kim Min-seok said, "Jung Dong-hwan went on 'You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook' and asked, 'Can you tell us what kind of person Min-seok is?' He referred to me as 'an old piano.' I took it in a very twisted way." Jung Dong-hwan explained, "I was trying to open the door to reconciliation. The old piano is the one I started playing since childhood; although I now play many good pianos, it may not be played as much now, but it's always been a part of my childhood."
Kim Min-seok noted, "Jung Dong-hwan cried so much. There are various kinds of tears, but I never thought of it as reconciliation tears, so I thought, 'I could act well.' However, this became the start of reconciliation. A sister I worked with told me, 'Before you go to the military, this will be your last album, so talk directly.' I went to the studio, and at that moment, when he was deeply absorbed in his music, it was the hardest time for me, so I suggested, 'Let's do this,' and that was when I saw my friend again."
Kim Min-seok added, "After two years, I had a drink with Jung Dong-hwan, and while drinking, time seemed to reverse to when we first started. I wanted to say, 'You know I don't like performing on stage alone. But because you were there, I enjoyed being on stage.' I struggled to express that. Then, from that point, Dong-hwan also started to cry. And that's when everything melted away."
Meanwhile, Melomance debuted in March 2015 and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Jung Dong-hwan is in charge of composition, arrangement, and piano, while Kim Min-seok handles lyrics, composition, and vocals. Their song 'Gift,' sung on 'You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook,' gained popularity through word of mouth and propelled them to stardom.
