R&B artist Thama (THAMA) will remake a hidden masterpiece by Kim Hyun-chul.
The project is named 'HIGHKOLOR.' This remake project, planned by the music creative group the ESKIMO, aims to reinterpret a classic song representing a past era using contemporary language and emotions.
The first remake song is 'Nevertheless,' a track from Kim Hyun-chul's fourth studio album released in 1995, known as 'the pioneer of Korean city pop.' This song delicately expresses a quiet sense of resignation with restrained speech and calm emotions. Although it did not receive much attention upon its release, over time, it has been referenced among music fans as a 'hidden masterpiece.'
Thama, who participated in this remake, has won the Best R&B & Soul Album Award at the Korean Music Awards and the R&B Album of the Year at the Korean Hip-Hop Awards. Thama's unique vocals, layered gently over a restrained rhythm, imbue the original song's emotions while adding a more modern texture. Instead of despair, it conveys a quiet sense of resignation, and rather than an explosion of emotions, it elegantly untangles the layered feelings contained in the phrase 'Nevertheless.'
Regarding the remake work, Thama said, 'It's a breakup song, but I sang it with an emotion of accepting it calmly, as if it's a story I can now talk about with a smile.' They added, 'If listening to this version leads someone to seek out the original, then I don't think there could be a better remake.' Thama continued, 'It was an opportunity to learn musically, and I hope I leave a good impression on the original artist, Kim Hyun-chul.'
Producer Park Young-woong, who planned the 'HIGHKOLOR' project, noted, 'This project conveys the feelings of that era in today's language,' and added, 'We plan to unravel the remake as a narrative, archiving emotions.' Through this song, HIGHKOLOR realizes the brand's slogan of 'restoring emotions.' It is a way to bring back the texture of faded emotions and reexamine them through a contemporary lens.
'HIGHKOLOR Vol.1 'Nevertheless (THAMA)' will be released on the 29th at 6 p.m. through all online music sites.
