KBS 2TV's first medical storytelling entertainment program, 'Celebrity Doctor's Secret,' delves into the sudden death of legendary actress Kang Soo-yeon, who laid the foundation for the Korean film industry.
The episode airing on the 22nd (Tuesday) will reveal stories about Kang Soo-yeon, who is the actual protagonist of the famous line "I'm not lacking money, am I lacking pride?" from the film 'Veteran,' and led the Korean film industry to its heyday.
Kang Soo-yeon began her acting career as a child actor and, as an adult, continued her unconventional path as a 'box office guarantee' during the drought of the Korean film industry. Lee Chan-won noted, "The line for audience members buying tickets extended from Jongno 3-ga to Jongno 2-ga," as Kang Soo-yeon set the record as the fourth highest-grossing film in Korean cinema history with 'Mimi and Cheolsu's Youth Sketch.'
The broadcast will also introduce Kang Soo-yeon's unending good deeds, such as buying meals for colleagues in the film industry who were not well off even when she reached the pinnacle of success, and her willingness to promote despite knowing it could lead to controversy. Special guest Director Byeon Young-joo reminisced, "Although I am the same age as Soo-yeon, I regard her as a senior. She believed that 'while we cannot feed every filmmaker in the world, we should at least buy them a meal.'"
However, beloved by both colleagues and audiences, Kang Soo-yeon complained of headaches one day in May and fell asleep after vomiting several times. While her family felt reassured by her snoring, she suddenly passed away at the young age of 56. The doctor who examined Kang Soo-yeon upon her arrival at the emergency room cited 'subarachnoid hemorrhage due to a ruptured aneurysm' as the cause.
'Dr. MC' Lee Nak-jun explained, "Kang Soo-yeon's family provided her health check results. It's not typical for someone at the age of 56 to suffer from a hemorrhage." He added, "Just because an aneurysm develops doesn't mean there are symptoms. We call it a 'time bomb in the head.'"
