The 2nd anniversary of the late Seo Se-won, who mysteriously passed away in Jakarta, has returned.
On April 20, 2023, Oh Chang-soo, the president of the Korean Missionary Society in Cambodia, noted, "It is true that Mr. Seo Se-won has died. At 1 p.m. Cambodia time, 3 p.m. Korea time, he died of shock while receiving an IV at a hospital in Cambodia."
On that day, during a news briefing targeting Koreans, the Cambodian side reported, "Seo Se-won died in Phnom Penh, Cambodia." According to reports, Seo Se-won died while receiving an IV at a hospital located in Phnom Penh. An official from the embassy also confirmed that it is true that Seo Se-won has died, and local police have started an investigation into the cause of death.
The late Seo Se-won was known to have suffered from complications related to diabetes. Oh Chang-soo noted, "The quality of doctors and facilities in hospitals in Cambodia are not like those in Seoul, so accidents where someone dies from a misplaced IV sometimes occur," and it was reported that the late Seo Se-won died while receiving an IV from a nurse during a hospital interview, shocking everyone.
Seo Se-won's daughter, Seo Dong-joo, went to Cambodia to pay her respects and returned with the remains. However, many mysterious aspects surrounding the death of Seo Se-won gave rise to various "theories." One media outlet reported that the hospital where Seo Se-won died was an unlicensed facility without a hospital permit or doctor's license, and that expired infusions and opened propofol were discovered.
There were also rumors that he died after being administered propofol instead of an IV. In response, Park Hyun-ok, the former president of the Korean Community in Cambodia, said, "That is not true. I saw with my own eyes. When I arrived at the hospital, he had an IV in his arm, and it was orange. It seemed like they added a nutritional supplement while he was receiving the infusion." There were also speculations that it was a crime committed in pursuit of the deceased's estate. In response, close associates of Seo Se-won dismissed the claims, saying, "There is not even a penny. They say he lived in luxury, but that is not true. He lived in a business hotel."
Seo Se-won's daughter, Seo Dong-joo, expressed frustration, saying, "I am not questioning who the first reporter was, whether the IV and infusion were taken away, whether statements have been taken from the nurse, or whether drug (or poison) tests have been done. I want to ask common-sense questions. But the only story I am hearing is that 'he died while receiving an IV.'"
Seo Se-won debuted in 1979 and received much love through programs such as "Sunday Sunday Night" and "The Seo Se-won Show." The late Seo Se-won, who worked as a comedian, film director, and producer, entered a theological university in the 2010s and became a pastor, also serving as a pastor at a church in Cambodia.
Meanwhile, Seo Se-won's ex-wife, Seo Jung-hee, is currently dating architect Kim Tae-hyun, who is 6 years younger, with plans for marriage. Their daughter, Seo Dong-joo, will remarry her boyfriend, who is 4 years younger, in June.
