Seohyun of Girls' Generation shared an episode from her trainee days.
On the 16th, a video titled "Seohyun came to grasp Hyoyeon's discipline (with informal speech)" was uploaded on the 'Hyoyeon's Level Up' channel.
On this day, as Seohyun appeared as a guest on 'Bap Sahyo', Hyoyeon said, "The members don't have that much age difference. Yoona is only 1 year younger, and Seohyun is 2 years younger." Seohyun conveyed, "I thought those people were 10 years older," and Hyoyeon asked, "I think the same is true around me," adding, "I think we looked younger because we were very polite. Why did we do that?"
Seohyun recalled, "That's the education I received at SM. Do you remember when we became SM trainees in elementary school? Seniors and juniors had to speak formally to each other, and that was the etiquette, right? I remember when I first joined, I ran into Yuri unni, and when she asked me my name, I said, 'I'm Seo Juhyun,' but she said, 'You can't speak informally, you must speak formally,' and I replied, 'Yes, understood,' and from that point on, it became second nature. I was a trainee for 5 years."
Hyoyeon asked, "What do we call that? Is it discipline? Was there someone who kept doing that?" Seohyun replied, "There wasn't anyone who did that in a scary way," to which Hyoyeon further inquired, "Not in a scary way, but was there a friend who tried to teach various things?" Seohyun honestly answered, "Yuri unni."
Hyoyeon continued, "Did you also do that when a junior came in? Did you say, 'Where do you think you're speaking informally?'" Seohyun replied, "No. But if I think about it, Fany also was a junior to me, and everyone is a junior to me." Hyoyeon mentioned, "Fany came from abroad and was a bit clumsy, and there was a time when Seohyun helped her out properly. It was not formal speech but the rules," and Seohyun noted, "Juniors have to come 30 minutes early to clean the studio."
However, upon hearing this, Tiffany responded with, "What?" Hyoyeon recalled, "She'd say, 'I don't understand Korean well,' and she'd have her nails like this. That was my first experience." Seohyun agreed, "She was a California girl," and Hyoyeon continued, "She was in 9th grade, but her nails were this long. I was like, 'I didn't know there could be nails like that,' carrying her bag like this," and Seohyun admitted, "It felt almost like 'how to survive as a queen bee,' wearing something pink like that."
Hyoyeon remarked, "That was exactly the vibe. But when Seohyun said, 'You have to come 30 minutes early to clean the studio,' she asked, 'Clean the studio?'" which caused laughter. Seohyun explained, "But that was the rule that had to be followed. The greatest senior can't say that, and when a junior comes in, I have to say something so that there can be discipline, right?"
In response, Hyoyeon noted, "That's right. Isn't it the same in a workplace? The boss doesn't go down and talk to an intern," but added, "But the older sisters could be a bit mischievous when we were all together." Seohyun confirmed, "That's right. I cried a lot. I couldn't handle the teasing, so as a kid, I cried over that."
He shared, "On my birthday, we were on tour in Japan, and everyone gathered for a birthday party. When I went to the bathroom, the older sisters were all gone. I really felt like crying. There was no cake, and they all disappeared, so I thought it was too much," saying he almost burst into tears, but then suddenly they came out from behind the curtain and surprised him.
Hyoyeon laughed at this, saying, "I was really anxious at that moment. I was worried if you actually went in there." Seohyun replied, "Let's only talk about the good things, unni. That never happened," and Hyoyeon reminisced, "I remember doing mischievous things with small pranks." Seohyun stated, "I don't cry over it anymore," and Hyoyeon agreed, "You've become so strong because of us." Seohyun revealed, "Now I can also joke around and do things like this, but back then, I thought, 'Why is this happening? Did I do something wrong?' I was just a kid."
