The appeal hearing of former announcer Yoo Young-jae, who was sentenced to prison in the first trial for sexual assault against the older sister of actress Sun Woo Eun-sook and his former sister-in-law, was held today, the 16th. Yoo Young-jae admitted to the allegations and apologized to the victim.
On the 16th, the 2-3 Criminal Division of Suwon High Court conducted the first hearing of the appeal for Yoo Young-jae, who was arrested on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Violent Crimes (sexual assault by a relative).
Earlier, Yoo Young-jae was accused of sexually assaulting his former sister-in-law, A, by touching her body on five occasions since 2023. While Yoo Young-jae denied the allegations in both the police and prosecution investigations, as well as in the first trial, last January, the trial court sentenced him to 2 years and 6 months in prison.
The court ordered him to undergo a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program and prohibited him from employment in organizations related to children, teenagers, and the disabled for five years, along with his detention in court. The day after the first trial ruling, Yoo Young-jae filed an appeal against the court's decision, and the prosecution also submitted an appeal.
While Yoo Young-jae denied the charges in the first trial, he admitted to the allegations in the second trial. Yoo Young-jae's side reported that he feels remorse for his actions and is living with a sincere heart of apology towards the victim.
In his final statement, Yoo Young-jae said, "I reflect on my past actions and acknowledge my lack of awareness regarding intimacy and sexual standards. I was wrong. I sincerely apologize to the victim who has been harmed by me and bow my head deeply in remorse for the suffering the victim has endured."
Meanwhile, Sun Woo Eun-sook and Yoo Young-jae were married in 2022 but divorced in April last year, just 1 year and 6 months later. Sun Woo Eun-sook filed an annulment lawsuit against Yoo Young-jae, citing the sexual assault lawsuit involving her older sister and Yoo Young-jae's common-law marriage allegations.
However, in December of last year, the Single Judge of the Family Court of Seongnam dismissed the lawsuit, stating that there was no longer a reason to proceed with further lawsuits since the two had already divorced.
