Sul KyungGu, the star of "Hyper Knife," revealed the reason for his 10 kg weight loss for the work.
An interview with Sul KyungGu, the leading actor of the Disney+ original series "Hyper Knife," took place at a cafe located in Seoul's Sogyeokdong on the morning of 14th.
"Hyper Knife" is a medical thriller that depicts the intense confrontation between Seo-uk (played by Park Eun-bin), a once-promising genius doctor, and his mentor Deok-hee (played by Sul KyungGu), who plunged him into despair.
Sul KyungGu, who challenged his first medical thriller, portrayed the character Choi Deok-hee, a world-class neurosurgeon with outstanding skills who cruelly expelled his once-beloved disciple. He collided fiercely with Park Eun-bin at times and revealed the complex emotions of a character showing his weaker side while caring for his disciple. He effectively maintained the overall narrative flow and proved why "Sul KyungGu is worth trusting" with his precise control and timing of acting.
"Hyper Knife" became a hot topic by topping the comprehensive rankings of Disney+ content in South Korea on the global OTT platform viewer ranking site Flicks Patrol immediately after its release. It also ranked in the top 5 in comprehensive content rankings in five countries: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Turkey, garnering interest from global viewers.
In particular, Sul KyungGu lost more than 10 kg to vividly express the pain and suffering of a character who is a highly skilled neurosurgeon but is suffering from a malignant tumor that is worsening daily. He noted, "I lost weight because I was greedy about the ending scene, but that was my short-sightedness. I read the script and thought it was a manageable schedule, but I felt disappointed with the production team. I was so disappointed that I swore a lot. (laughs) I said I wouldn't let it go."
He continued, "I wanted to express the character's dying. But they said from the beginning that (the schedule) couldn't work. I was really disappointed. I thought it would be fine if they said no after some thought, but from the beginning, they told me, 'You can't schedule it like that.' But they just arbitrarily decided to 'lose weight' and started it without any discussion. There were past and present, and on that day of filming, it was truly difficult. We were filming both present and past scenes. The anger boiled up inside me. (laughs) At the end, I refused and said, 'I can't do this even if I die.' It became impossible, and I had a breakdown, but later, I forcibly understood it. Still, it was frustrating," he expressed with a cute pout.
Sul KyungGu started fasting three days before filming the ending scene and ultimately lost 10 kg. He stated, "It would be bizarre for a character to die with a healthy face. I can't convince myself of that. I would be embarrassed." He added, "If I'm dying, I need to at least look in pain and show a somewhat different face. This is how I avoid looking foolish as an actor, not just to bear responsibility."
Meanwhile, "Hyper Knife" is an eight-part series that released all episodes on the 9th.
