KBS2 'Boss's ears are donkey's ears' Lee Soon-sil reveals her sad memories with her estranged daughter as she makes dolls by hand with scrap fabric.
KBS 2TV 'Boss's ears are donkey's ears' (directed by Ahn Sang-eun, hereafter 'Boss's ears') is a program for self-reflection and perspective-taking by bosses in South Korea to create a work environment where people enjoy working. The last episode recorded a viewership rating of 6.6%, continuing its ranking as the number one entertainment show in the same time slot for 149 consecutive weeks. (based on Nielsen Korea)
The upcoming 301st episode of 'Boss's ears' scheduled to air on the 13th features special guest Koo Bon-seung. Lee Soon-sil heads to the Dongdaemun fabric market to make baby clothes for her North Korean defector sister Kim Ah-ra, demonstrating her skills from her days as a flower thief. Lee Soon-sil, while confidently operating the sewing machine, says, "Sister, I'll do the work for you and get the fabric," and after quickly scanning the store, she sweeps up cotton and scrap fabric. As Lee Soon-sil inspects the fabric store, looking for more to take, the shop owner quips, "Are you a thief?" to which Lee Soon-sil humorously responds, "I've just come from stealing in North Korea," sparking laughter.
With her eyes wide open at the colorful fabrics, Lee Soon-sil charms the shopkeeper with her miraculous logic of everything costing a thousand won, saying, "Once we are unified, I'll give you a free tour of Pyongyang," revealing her master negotiation tactic. Surprised by Lee Soon-sil's bargain for a mere thousand won, Kim Suk exclaims, "Is this going to work?" and Koo Bon-seung laughs out loud at Lee Soon-sil's whimsical negotiating style.
Having gathered fabric from the store, Lee Soon-sil starts working on baby clothes, a Chollima-style baby carrier, and doll-making. As she begins sewing with deft hands, she reveals her memories of the daughter she was separated from during her defection by making scrap dolls.
Lee Soon-sil shares her story, saying, "When I lived as a flower thief, my daughter begged me to buy her a doll, so I tied up some old fabric and made her one, and she would always hug it." Reflecting on the guilt of not being able to buy her daughter a doll, her actions while creating the scrap fabric doll elicit sympathy. Park Myung-soo expresses concern, saying, "I bet that must be haunting you."
Lee Soon-sil's scrap fabric dolls, along with the Chollima-style baby carrier, cloth diapers, and baby clothes, will be revealed in the upcoming episode of 'Boss's ears' airing on the 13th.
