MBC announcer veteran Baek Ji-yeon shared stories about wealth.
On the 7th, a video titled "Was there a reason I am not wealthy?!" was posted on the YouTube channel 'Now Baek Ji-yeon'.
Baek Ji-yeon said, "What makes a person truly wealthy? I've pondered that a lot. What do people's definitions of wealth entail?" and then elaborated, "When I think, 'Ah, this person is genuinely wealthy,' it's when they make significant purchases. But I can't remember how much those items cost. And I thought that not having my dreams thwarted by a lack of money is also a type of wealth."
She further stated, "In that sense, if we think about it, those who have built their wealth on their own, aside from inheritance, what paths did they take to achieve stability? At this age, it's evident. Firstly, from what I've seen, truly wealthy people never buy stocks they don't understand."
He looked at it and remarked, "Wealthy people are indeed diligent about investing in stocks. They surely do. However, they do not buy stocks they do not understand, and they never watch broadcasts by analysts. Once they decide on a single stock, they study it thoroughly. Only when they are confident about that corporation do they invest. They never invest in what they don't understand."
Moreover, he noted, "They also never buy lottery tickets. They do not rely on luck. Of course, these days, I've noticed that there are very few countries, including ours, that have so many supercars. Even in the United States, which is much wealthier than us, there are truly many cars that are said to be rolling around." He pointed out, "During the time I spend chasing trends and investing my money and efforts, I'm thinking of directing my efforts toward many possibilities instead. I believe this mindset is important, and I'm trying to emulate that from now on."
In particular, Baek Ji-yeon said, "If we imagine living in a neighborhood where we don't stand out, would we strive to buy luxury bags? Who would notice us? No one would be watching. Since no one would notice us, would we indulge in luxury? I don't think so. This type of consumption is merely for showing off to others; in a way, it's consumption for others, isn't it?"
She continued, "And honestly, I've thought a lot about this. There are owners of luxury companies. They are undoubtedly very wealthy. Do I really need to contribute to the wealth of someone who is already wealthy? I suppressed my consumption desires while pondering this." She remarked, "Wealthy people, to put it simply, prioritize quality over quantity. They do not indulge in quantitative consumption. For instance, just because something is cheap or cute, it doesn't mean they buy it. Asking oneself multiple times whether something is truly needed is also a method worth considering."
Meanwhile, Baek Ji-yeon joined MBC as a newscaster in 1987 and transitioned to a freelancer after leaving MBC in 1999. She also reported in 2023 that former anchor Baek Ji-yeon had become related by marriage to the Hyundai family.
