MBN 'Let's go GO Season 4' featured South Korea's leading villain actor Kim Byung-ok, showcasing his unexpected charm.
In the 9th episode of MBN 'Let's go GO Season 4,' which aired on the 6th, actor Kim Byung-ok, known for his restrained charisma and intense gaze, captivated viewers with an unpredictable charm not seen anywhere else.
MCs Ahn Jung-hwan and Hong Hyun-hee, invited to Kim Byung-ok's home, discussed life and home with Kim Byung-ok and his wife. Kim Byung-ok noted, "It's been a bit over 2 years since I moved into this house. They call it a lease refugee, right? I kept applying for apartment rentals for years but finally won a draw. However, interest rates were around 7-8% at that time, and I felt that I would lose my home if I didn't sell it quickly, so I sold at a loss. The loss was about 300 million won," he said with a bitter smile. Kim Byung-ok's wife also shared, "We moved into the new house joyfully, but the joy was short-lived. Interest rates increased, and I was under an overwhelming amount of stress," recalling the unfortunate events that led them to lose their home.
The MCs asked Kim Byung-ok and his wife about the circumstances of their marriage, and Kim Byung-ok shared, "My mother said, 'I hope you get married while I'm still alive. But I don't think I will live long.' I hadn't listened to my mother until then, but I thought, 'I need to hear this.'" He revealed the motivation behind their marriage. Kim Byung-ok further remarked, "My mother praised my wife until she passed away," to which the MCs responded, "It seems you made a good marriage. Your wife is a great gift from your mother."
Kim Byung-ok disclosed that he lost all his land while providing a guarantee for friends, which angered the MCs. They asked, "Did you also invest in stocks aside from the guarantee?" Kim Byung-ok replied nonchalantly, "I did before." The MCs inquired about the amount he lost in stocks, and Kim Byung-ok's wife added, "If we had saved that, we could have lived in Sweet Home now," suggesting, "It could have been worth one more house," again eliciting a sense of regret from everyone.
After the house tour, Kim Byung-ok's close friend and actor Son Byung-ho made a surprise guest appearance during the meal, creating a lively atmosphere with his energetic presence. Kim Byung-ok and Son Byung-ho, who have been friends for over 30 years since 1989, reflected on their time in the theater, stating, "It was tough." Son Byung-ho remarked, "In 1994, we had the O Tae-seok Theater Festival, and I worked with other directors aside from O Tae-seok. Their directing style was a bit harsh, and they would hit us. But you endured it all. For the greater good, you tolerated it. That's your true charm, your silent commitment to principle."
The MCs asked Son Byung-ho if he had heard about Kim Byung-ok's child's wedding, to which Son Byung-ho cheerfully replied, "Of course I know. But I felt a bit left out. I've officiated 57 weddings, and there was no word about it. Then I heard, 'Deok-hwa-hyung is officiating,' which surprised me."
The MCs asked Kim Byung-ok, "What do you feel most grateful and apologetic about to your wife?" Kim Byung-ok answered without a moment's hesitation, "I think every day, 'What would have happened if my wife had not been here?'"
Kim Byung-ok recalled the challenges he faced after his mother passed away, followed by his father seven years later, who suffered from dementia. "My wife went through a lot during that time. Our relationship was tough, and caring for my father was so demanding that it could have led to divorce," he shared, reflecting on his past hardships with gratitude towards his wife. However, when the MCs asked, "Did you express your gratitude?" Kim Byung-ok sheepishly responded, "I couldn't because I was overwhelmed. It was after my father passed that I realized. Since then, I've tried to live joyfully and happily, but it hasn't been easy," prompting laughter.
Finally, Kim Byung-ok expressed, "I wonder how I can live joyfully. I tell myself, 'Let's spend the day happily and with a smile.' I enjoy walking my dog and buying medication. Those small things bring joy and fun to my life now," revealing his contentment with the current simple pleasures in life, creating a warm atmosphere.
Meanwhile, 'Let's go GO Season 4' is a nationwide house tour program where the MCs Ahn Jung-hwan and Hong Hyun-hee visit the homes of stars who send them invitations and share life stories, airing every Sunday at 10:30 p.m.
