It has been 2 years since singer Hyun-mi passed away.
April 4, 2025, marks the 2nd anniversary of the late Hyun-mi's passing. She died on April 4, 2023, in the morning, at the age of 85.
According to police, Hyun-mi was found collapsed at her home in Ichon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, by the president of her fan club, Mr. Kim, who reported it to the police. Hyun-mi was moved to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead. The news of Hyun-mi's death was shocking, as she had performed on stage for a free concert for her elderly fans just a day before.
Lee Ja-yeon, the president of the Korean Singer Association, noted in a YouTube channel regarding Hyun-mi's death, "She was fine until yesterday when she went out to eat, so it seems she fell down. Last year, she fell while making a flower pot on her veranda and broke her ankle, but she said, 'I'm all healed now.' However, once you get injured, you become vulnerable. Even if your ankle twists, it often continues to get injured. I wonder if that might have been the cause. They say she fell in front of the sink, and I think if someone had helped her quickly, this incident might not have happened."
Upon hearing the news of Hyun-mi's death, her niece, Noh Sa-yeon, arrived at the mortuary and cried for a long time. Noh Sa-yeon comforted Hyun-mi's son, Lee Young-gon, saying, "Mom has gone to a good place, so don't feel too guilty." Lee Young-gon cried out, "How can our mom leave us like this?"
Later, in an interview with a current affairs program crew, Hyun-mi said, "At first, I was stunned and speechless. I thought that something like this could happen because my aunt was alone. When someone said that someone had passed away, I didn't believe it. There are so many fake news stories that I thought, 'It's a lie.' But it was being reported as true, and I was really surprised."
Another niece, actor Han Sang-jin, recalled, "At that time, I was on the move, and my acquaintances saw the article. I didn't want to tell them while I was driving for fear of them being shocked, and at first, I said it was fake news. Then I looked at my cell phone, and there were calls from my family."
Meanwhile, first-generation displaced singer Hyun-mi began her entertainment activities through the U.S. Army's 8th Army stage. She gained much love with 'Night Mist,' released in 1962, and produced hit songs such as 'A Face I Miss,' 'Leaving Without a Word,' 'All My Love,' and 'Just Loved It So Much.'
