KBS will broadcast a special documentary titled "No Farewells" on April 7 to mark the 100th day since the Jeju Air passenger plane tragedy.
On Dec. 29, 2024, the most tragic aviation accident in South Korean history occurred at Jeollanam-do's Muan International Airport, resulting in the loss of 179 lives among the passengers. However, the incident has been overshadowed by chaotic domestic political issues.
This documentary closely follows the bereaved families from the day of the accident up to 100 days after. It aims to highlight the need for empathy and solidarity to overcome this tragedy by conveying the current state of the bereaved families, which has not been well covered by the media.
Through the stories of Kim Seong-cheol, who lost his daughter and wife; Na Myeong-rye, who lost her son and fiancée; and Park In-wook, who lost five family members in the Jeju Air passenger plane tragedy despite being a public servant who recovered the Seohae ferry and Sewol ferry, this documentary emphasizes that the tragedy is not just an individual misfortune but a shared burden of the community. It will once again examine the loss of vigilance against safety negligence, which is the main cause of repeated tragedies. Additionally, it aims to illustrate that when the community mourns together and overcomes grief, society can step into a better world.
Scenes of the bereaved families during the Seollal (Lunar New Year) preparations at the Muan Airport shelter convey that community solidarity can create a strong sense of humanity. The ceremonial washing and burning of paper clothes during the 49th day memorial service will witness the mature struggle of humanity to overcome sorrow.
Notably, actor Han Seok-kyu providing the narration is worth mentioning. Han Seok-kyu expressed his willingness to participate, stating that "if my voice can bring comfort and strength to the bereaved families, I will gladly participate," demonstrating the importance of solidarity through his actions. Throughout the dubbing process, he was visibly moved and empathized with the bereaved families, and after completing the dubbing, he aimed to send a comforting message to them with a choked voice.
The production team of the documentary "100 Days After the Jeju Air Passenger Plane Tragedy, No Farewells" hopes that this tragedy will never be forgotten and that a social atmosphere can be created to hold accountable those responsible for the tragedy.
