That day, Jang Young-ran visited Sayuri's home in Gangnam with her son Jun-woo. She asked, "How is the academic enthusiasm here?" and Sayuri said, "Here, they focus a lot on language study. They really emphasize English study."
She continued, "But I felt I wanted my child to speak Korean perfectly. So, I could send them to an English kindergarten quickly, but I didn't want to do that. Because at home we speak Japanese, and if we go outside and only speak English, Korean will become poor."
In response, Jang Young-ran said, "Now, ultimately, they can start learning Japanese, Korean, and English from now on," and Sayuri noted, "There are assignments from the English kindergarten. I've written a letter to the teacher about the assignments. My son absolutely does not do his homework. I also oppose homework at this age. I am very proud of my son who doesn't do homework, so I asked not to send homework to my son. If we do that, he will come to dislike English. If curiosity declines, he won't continue learning it."
Hearing this, Jang Young-ran marveled, "You have so much to learn in your educational philosophy. Ultimately, he's 6 years old, but how well does he speak languages?" In fact, Sayuri revealed that she can speak, in addition to Korean and Japanese, even Chinese.
Jang Young-ran was surprised, "Are you also studying Chinese?" and Sayuri explained, "Because he likes it. If you know languages, you can live anywhere. He can choose for himself.
