The worst arson-murder case, which claimed numerous lives, has been revealed.
The 28th episode of the show "Brave Detectives 4," aired on the 28th on the T-Cast E Channel, featured former Chief of the International Criminal Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Lee In-yeol, Seongdong Police Station's Lee Hyun-yong, and former Commissioner Yun Oe-chul of the Scientific Investigation Unit (KCSI), as well as Kim Jin-soo, who grants the investigative diary they solved themselves. Exo's Xiumin, who made a solo comeback, also appeared as a guest and naturally led the atmosphere, showing off his loyal viewer qualities.
The first case introduced in the broadcast that day began with a report of a large fire occurring in a motel located in an alley crowded with entertainment establishments. In this incident, three people died on the spot and two others were hospitalized with serious injuries. The fire broke out in two rooms on the second floor, making the possibility of arson high. It was difficult to find the cause of the fire as the rooms were completely burned, and there was only one malfunctioning CCTV camera. According to a motel employee, there was a complaint from the second-floor room that morning. Someone claimed that there was no razor, so they went to provide one, but the complainant was angry, saying that someone must have given them a used razor since they had cut their face. The man who came with a woman in the early morning was confirmed to be drunk and had paid in cash.
Detectives expanded their investigation radius to the surrounding entertainment establishments since there were often fines imposed on drunk individuals. If problems arose over drink bills, they sometimes sent customers and helpers to motels to smooth things over, so they inquired whether anyone had gone to the motel where the fire occurred on the day of the incident. Upon checking, it turned out that the guest who filed the complaint, Mr. Park, was the one who caused a disturbance over the bill and had been sent from the bar to the motel. The detectives went directly to Mr. Park's home. When they asked him, "Did you see the news?" his expression hardened, and they immediately entered interrogation. They led him to confess, saying that the news had been misreported and that the person who was hospitalized would be discharged soon, while also cornering him with a photograph of his driver's license. At that moment, Mr. Park muttered, "It was a spur-of-the-moment thing," and the detectives seized the opportunity to have him write a statement right there.
In the meantime, one more death was added. Mr. Park, who committed the worst arson-murder case, stated at the police station that he committed the crime because of the razor. During the investigation, he shockingly revealed that he felt deceived by the bar owner and motel owner working together, and he was angry because he had also cut himself with the razor. Mr. Park was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The next case introduced by KCSI began with a report of a fire at a first-floor villa. Flames and smoke rose through broken windows, and firefighters struggled to extinguish it, but the mother, maternal grandmother, and two daughters, a total of four family members, all died. Flammable materials were found on site, indicating that it was an intentional act of arson. The explosion was believed to have occurred when a butane gas canister exploded, blocking the exit with the flames.
The first person to be investigated was the husband and father. He expressed regret that he should have come to the police station much earlier while living apart from his family. His wife was extremely anxious due to his youngest daughter's boyfriend, whom she had split with two months prior. Due to his obsession, she had ended the relationship, but he repeatedly visited, saying they should get back together. It was revealed that he had also been sending threatening text messages to the youngest daughter. A confirmation from the mobile station revealed that he lived just a three-minute drive away from the victim's home. He was a part-time driver, transporting substitute drivers, and he claimed that he dropped off two substitute drivers the morning of the fire.
However, upon searching the trunk of the vehicle he drove, an 18-liter canister of thinner was found. The location where he dropped off the substitute driver was also near the victim's house. Calculating the time, there was a 30-minute gap between the substitute driver's drop-off and the fire occurrence. Most importantly, according to the substitute drivers, he had been talking about revenge since two months ago and had boasted about his plans for the crime. The investigation revealed that the components of the thinner that exited the vehicle were identical to those found at the victim's home. It was also confirmed that he purchased the thinner from a paint store. Nevertheless, when he continued to deny it, the investigation team showed him a photo of his deceased ex-girlfriend with her eyes open. After staring at the photo for a while, he confessed. During the trial, he claimed that he had consumed two and a half bottles of soju before the crime, arguing that he was mentally impaired, but it was confirmed that he had driven and accessed an online gaming site after the crime, so his claims were not accepted, and he was sentenced to life in prison.
